Belgrund
Nothing travels through Emberdeep without paying. The house's whole fortune is a chokepoint and the charters that confirm it holds one. A second income comes from Belgrund's forges.
Belgrund is Kinsworn. It keeps dwarf inheritance law over its own succession and dwarf gods over its own oaths, and the Forge treats both as facts about the house rather than as affectations. The tradition is primal: pasture, thin settlement, and law kept by memory. Its adherence to the Accords is the loosest in the ring.
The holding
the Hundredweight Bar — the beam that is the toll
Gated cavern mouth in grey basalt, with weighbridge, fodder sheds and the cart road above
One cavern mouth in grey basalt, walled and gated, the eastern route into the deep holds, which explains the Hundredweight Bar's location. The Emberdeep road comes past it cut wide enough for two carts and kept clear at hold expense from March to November. Nothing above the treeline grows here beyond the fodder the garrisons cut in August, so hay comes up from the plains and stands in sheds beside the weighbridge. The Broadfen yard is rented out of the shoulder above the road, the Forge lies three weeks west, and Pardah Reach begins east of the gate.

Talionwe 04 Three coastal houses hired Talionwe to fight Belgrund's charge on hay sold to passing carts, and lost: the court called it a sale and not a toll. The charge has been raised once since and now stands above where it began.
Vantrose 28 Vantrose has twice lent against Belgrund's toll income, in 813 and 817, which makes a foreign bank the creditor of a dwarf toll gate. Belgrund repaid the second loan in cut metal.
Ashgrave 46 Ashgrave's yard sits on Belgrund's land on a yearly tenancy at sixty crowns and no right to use the gate, so its mules stand outside the barrier overnight from November. Belgrund has refused a gate three times, and the rent has not moved since 809.
Umbermere 67 Belgrund buys 400 hundredweight of barley and its winter hay from Umbermere each autumn, weighed at Belgrund's gate on Belgrund's own scales. Umbermere's agents have twice asked to weigh on their own.
Vorlaine 68 Every load of burial salt going west out of Vorlaine pays Belgrund four coppers a hundredweight. The rate has doubled in thirteen years.

The bar charges on every load that crosses its beam. burial salt off Vorlaine's fourth surface opening pay four coppers per hundredweight going west, on a schedule raised in 806 and again in 819, and the carters read the older one aloud at the gate every crossing. Hay sold to Forge-bound carts carries a surcharge that three coast houses hired Talionwe to challenge; the pleading failed, and the surcharge went up the following season. Umbermere's barley and the winter hay are weighed on the hold's own beam, despite two requests from its factors for an outside measure. Drennhold's relief columns march down the road twice a year without paying; the assessment has stood as arrears since 814, with no demand sent.

Every load of burial salt going west off Vorlaine pays Belgrund's four coppers per hundredweight, on a schedule raised in 806 and again in 819. Vorlaine's carters keep a copy of the older schedule and read it aloud at the gate, which alters nothing and is done at every crossing.

Drennhold marches its relief columns down the Emberdeep road twice a year and pays the bar nothing, holding that a garrison in transit is not a load. Belgrund has assessed the columns at 260 crowns a year since 814, enters the arrears, and lodges the whole sum as a claim while sending no demand.

Ashgrave's yard sits in Belgrund's shoulder on a yearly tenancy at sixty crowns with no gate rights, so the agency's mules stand outside the bar overnight from November. Belgrund has refused a gate three times, and the rent has stood where it was set in 809.

Belgrund buys 400 hundredweight of barley and its main incomes winter hay off Umbermere's each autumn, brought down the cavern road and weighed at the bar on the hold's own beam. Umbermere's factors have twice asked to weigh on their own and been told that the beam is the toll.
-
Vantrose has advanced against Belgrund's takings twice, in 813 and 817, at a tenth on the weighbridge receipts, which makes a Corvantine vault the creditor of a Kazdrunn toll. Belgrund settled the second advance in cut metal, and Vantrose's book still has no column for it.
-
Three coast houses retained Talionwe to challenge Belgrund's fodder surcharge on Forge-bound carts and lost, on the pleading that hay sold at the gate is a sale and not a toll. Belgrund raised the surcharge again the following season, and Talionwe declines to take the case a second time on the same facts.
Carters on the Emberdeep road say Vantrose reads the bar's takings before the hold's own clerks do, and Steepford's book shows no column for it. Said in the Emberdeep
