Ashgrave
Chartered agencies and mercenary companies. Ashgrave operates the fiction that keeps Clause I intact and charges clients to use it. A bench of treaty lawyers works for Ashgrave.
Ashgrave is Undivided. Its shape is an instrument, and its loyalty runs to the roughly two hundred beings in the world it considers truly relevant. A petitioner gets further with an offer than with an appeal to local kinship. Its institutions are arcane: literate, incremental, and content to win an argument in the thirtieth year of it. The treaty is an instrument to them, to be read closely and used.
The holding
the Emberdeep Yard — the agency with nothing to attach
Rented yard cut into the hold's shoulder above the road, records office, mule lines, no gate
A yard cut out of Belgrund's shoulder above the Emberdeep road, held on a yearly tenancy: a records office, a copying room, mule lines, no gate. From November the mules stand outside the bar overnight, since a tenant without gate rights is a tenant on the wrong side of the wall when the weather closes. Nothing here is grown or dug; everything the yard eats comes up the road on the Corvantine hundredweight and is converted at somebody else's beam. Pardah Reach lies a fortnight east, the Forge nine days west, and the nearest court that would hear a Corvantine filing is inside the Forge walls.
Connections
Four names and some thirty hired clerks live on other people's litigation.
Allies takes this house’s side 1
Neutral trades, and no more than that 3
Stonewrit 10 Ashgrave rents two rooms and a strongbox for forty crowns a season. Those rooms are its entire address inside the walls.
Belgrund 31 Ashgrave's yard sits on Belgrund's land on a yearly tenancy at sixty crowns and no right to use the gate, so its mules stand outside the barrier overnight from November. Belgrund has refused a gate three times, and the rent has not moved since 809.
Gundvarr 44 Ashgrave's four members and thirty hired clerks eat Gundvarr's grain, sent in one system of weights and converted at the gate into another at a rate Ashgrave has never accepted. It pays the difference and lodges a formal protest with its own record office every quarter.
Enemies has something open against it 2
Vaethril 02 The two have been hired against each other over the same cave rents nine times since 811, and twice found halfway through a hearing that one client was paying both. Ashgrave walked out both times and charged for walking out.
Drennhold 64 Ashgrave has worked since 809 for a client it records only as the northern account, and every summons it has issued since has been against one of Drennhold's tenants. Drennhold's clerks stopped asking whose money it is around 815 and now simply answer on time.
The full account — 6 houses, 6 arrangements
Four names and some thirty hired clerks live on other people's litigation. A general retainer has run since 809 from a principal the yard enters as the northern account, and every summons issued since has gone against a tenant of Drennhold's underground passage boundary. Vaskaryn's toll office pays in Ostrovek harbour credits for cartage suits it would rather not be seen filing, and Broadfen appears as the principal. Gundvarr's grain arrives on the Corvantine hundredweight and is converted at Belgrund's beam at a rate Ashgrave continues to dispute, so the yard pays the difference and lodges a written protest with its own records office each quarter. Twice since 811 it has found itself opposite Vaethril in a cavern-stage hearing and discovered mid-morning that both retainers came from the same purse; it withdrew on both occasions and billed for the withdrawal.

Ashgrave appears as principal in the Emberdeep road cartage suits Vaskaryn's toll office would rather not be seen filing, and takes the retainer in Ostrovek harbour credits rather than coin. The yard at Ashgrave is rented, has no gate, and holds nothing a losing party could attach.

Ashgrave rents two rooms and a strongbox in Stonewrit for the Forge terms at forty crowns the season, which is the whole of the agency's address inside the walls. The letting runs season by season, and Stonewrit's clerks decline to discuss renewal before the last month of the term.

Four names and thirty hired clerks eat out of Ashgrave's yard, all of it Gundvarr grain sent up on the Corvantine hundredweight and converted at the bar to the dwarven weight at a rate Ashgrave has never accepted. Clerks at the Nine Courses say a northern account has paid Broadfen's rent since 809, while the yard's records office omits the payer. Said in the Emberdeep
