Vaskaryn

Coldwell, the Ostrovek Sound · Warm iron · 15 living names

Vaskaryn owns movement. Passes, bridges, a river mouth at Coldwell, and the tariff schedule that decides what everyone else's trade costs. A paper business supplements Vaskaryn's main income.

The line between dragon and mortal is where Vaskaryn draws it. Its peers are the other Wrights, everyone at Coldwell is a subject or a client, and the arrangement is set out plainly in the house's own charters. The tradition is arcane, which at Coldwell means a college, an archive and a filing habit. It wrote the case law the Accords are now read through.

Shingle spit at the Ferravant mouth on the Ostrovek Sound: toll shed, tide gauge, deep moorings

Four fathoms at low water inside the Ferravant mouth are the whole reason the Ostrovek landings are there: a shingle spit on the Ostrovek Sound carrying a toll shed, a tide gauge and a cooperage, on ground suited to the toll shed, tide gauge and cooperage rather than cultivation. Barley comes down the Ferravant from the Whittleford ford and everything else lands over the same moorings it is charged for. Sound boats work north to the Holm and the causeway heads, the grain convoys come round from the Corvantine coast, and Coldwell itself stands just inland at the first hard ground above the marsh.

The full account — 9 houses, 13 arrangements

Rates are charged by the load, with a surcharge on winter hulls, and the same clerks keep the loan book. Aldemarch's quartermasters have costed the overland road twice and paid at the moorings both times, there being no other deep water on this coast for a grain convoy. Seed corn and the ford repairs at Whittleford are advanced each spring against the standing crop, and a twelfth of the barley is taken in kind before a sack is landed, which the Whittleford assembly has formally read as a grievance at nine consecutive sittings. Fifteen names answer for the lot at the summer assembly, in the order the debts were incurred. Barleystaith holds the assignment on three seasons' receipts, the arrears stand at eleven months, and Cropmarch has not entered a reason for the delay.

  • out 13 Grimhaldr claim

Vaskaryn has bought nine quarter-shares in the Redgate toll out of the estates of Grimhaldr men who left no heirs, paying the Falkvald assembly's clearance fee on each. Four Anvil Stair holds hold that a toll share on a Forge-bound road cannot pass to a house with no gate, and the Forge has taken the point on notice twice without ruling.

  • out · in 17 Ostwyck carriage · law

The sound boats out of the landings carry the oath-parties and the coffins to the Holm at the rate posted on the toll shed, corpses at double. They stop with the first hard frost, which is why the cairn season closes in the eleventh month whatever the northern assemblies have been promised.

Vaskaryn's loan book carries bonds sworn by Falkvald crews, and northern practice treats a term three years unformally read as abandoned. Ostwyck recites them at the oath-house each spring for a twentieth of the sums called, and keeps the only list of which oaths are still standing.

  • out · in 65 Skarveth credit · grain

The landings advance the seed corn and the ford repairs every spring against the standing crop and against nothing else. Three names hold Skarveth, and one wet harvest on the Ferravant loam would put the loan book in front of an assembly that has disliked it from the start.

Four hundred quarters of barley come down the Ferravant from Skarveth's ford each autumn, and a twelfth is taken in kind at the moorings before a sack is landed. The spit grows nothing, so the landings feed their toll crews and pilots out of that twelfth, which Skarveth's assembly has formally read as a grievance at nine consecutive sittings.

  • out 53 Aldemarch carriage

Corvantine grain convoys for Aldemarch land at the landings because there is no other deep water on that coast, and Vaskaryn charges by the load, with a surcharge on winter hulls. Aldemarch's quartermasters have costed the overland road twice and paid the toll both times; the Ward wants nothing that opens the treaty question and the landings are positioned for the day something does, and neither house raises it at the tide gauge.

  • out · in 79 Kazdrun carriage · litigation

Everything the works eat and everything they sell crosses Vaskaryn's landings, there being no other deep water on that coast: nine thousand tons of pig out a year and eighteen thousand quarters of bread grain back in the same hulls, charged by the load with a surcharge on winter bottoms. Vaskaryn has raised the load rate twice since the delay charge suit was filed and posted both rises on the toll shed.

Vaskaryn's toll shed refused a Kazdrun freight contract in 809 AF because it came as a cut half-plate with no lodged copy, and forty tons of blooms sat on the shingle for a season. Kazdrun is suing at the Forge for the delay charge; Vaskaryn's defence is that a tally-stick and a half-plate are both unreadable to a records office, so neither party held a document.

  • in 71 Valdrenne credit · litigation

Valdrenne advanced against Vaskaryn' toll receipts for twenty years and holds the last three seasons' assignment. Since the Valdrenne plate went cold, Vaskaryn has paid eleven months in arrears and has been waiting to see who writes.

Valdrenne bought the Ostrovek anchorage charter from a Vaskaryn factor and found that the moorings were not in it, and the suit has sat at Ferrovane's appeal court for a hundred and forty years. Valdrenne has no living names left to answer the adjournments Vaskaryn's clerks ask for, and asks for none of its own.

  • in 68 Vorlaine information

Vorlaine reports which cistern shares at the Pardah's fourth surface opening have fallen behind on the washing charge, and Vaskaryn buys the defaulted shares through a Reach factor so that no Vaskarni name reaches the records office. Both houses are Breaks, and a water share is the only asset either holds that a war would not burn.

  • in 46 Ashgrave licence

Ashgrave appears as principal in the Emberdeep road cartage suits Vaskaryn's toll office would rather not be seen filing, and takes the retainer in Ostrovek harbour credits rather than coin. The yard at Ashgrave is rented, has no gate, and holds nothing a losing party could attach.

  • in 27 Quorravel information

The shoal's list of hulls lost on the Kelpwrack reaches the landings before the owners' letters do, which is the only reason Vaskaryn will underwrite a hull on the sound at all. Vaskaryn pays with a standing credit at Quorravel and by asking nothing about the wreck rights, which were sold off generations ago and still change hands at the free ports.

The Forge has it that the landings' pilots keep a second book of soundings, and that Kazdrun's delay charge suit was filed to make somebody produce it. Said in the Ostrovek Sound
