Kurohane
Everything Kurohane has is arranged around a line on a map. Watch-towers, garrison roads, and a standing account of what crossed and when. Kurohane also lends.
Kurohane is Undivided, and its tengu shape is a working convenience rather than a claim of kinship. The people of Yanaseki are governed rather than represented, and the house says as much when it is asked. Its institutions are arcane. Mage-cities and chartered guilds run on written procedure, and the tradition supplies most of the plate-readers the ring argues in front of.
The holding
the Matsugane Watch — the three towers above the coast yards
Pine bluffs above the coast yards, timber slides, three watch-towers, ridge track by concession
Matsugane pine grows on the bluffs where the Pardah Reach mountains drop through badlands to the eastern ocean, the one stretch of the Reach that produces anything a shipwright wants. Three watch-towers stand along the ridge, the slides run down to the coast yards, and the ridge track joining them is held on concession from the water records office rather than by any right of its own. No rice grows on the bluffs and no cistern share attaches to the towers, so grain comes up the Yatsuhoshi coast in eight-ton coasters and water is bought by the load. Thornwater lies two days west and the records office stair beyond it.
Connections
Timber and watching pay for the towers.
Allies takes this house’s side 4
Draveholt 40 Draveholt licenses the coastal yards to build ships to its designs, three hulls a year at a tenth of the contract price. Kurohane collects the fee for it and keeps a tenth, and both houses record that tenth as freight.
Cuiveril 43 Four hundred bundles of pine a winter go down to Cuiveril to keep its vault dry. Kurohane takes payment as two student places a year rather than coin.
Erevanth 49 Erevanth's guards are Kurohane's men on a standing contract of 300 crowns a year, and what Erevanth buys is that nothing has come down off the cliffs in ninety years. Kurohane also sends 1,800 cords of charcoal a year for the foundry, and the ash goes back up the ridge as orchard fertiliser.
Ferrovane 50 Ferrovane trains Kurohane's clerks for a year each so Kurohane's road rights can be argued in Corvantine form when they are challenged. Kurohane pays 600 silver a clerk and first refusal on mast timber, and Ferrovane takes no clerk from the house on the other side of the same dispute.
Neutral trades, and no more than that 4
Naskarre 48 Naskarre borrowed 7,000 silver against three years of charcoal to reline its furnace, and Kurohane holds the debt from five cells away. Naskarre has three living members, so a missed payment is the act of the whole house.
Emberlin 52 Kurohane's three watchtowers and its work crews eat 2,600 hundredweight of rice and millet a year, shipped up the coast in small boats and carted along the ridge. Kurohane pays the freight in timber and the grain in coin.
Verrigan 75 Rice, water and firewood for Verrigan's counting house come down the track from Kurohane's stores. One house measures in koku and the other enters bushels, and the difference is argued at every quarterly audit and then split.
Vurrgast 80 Half the 5,000 cords Vurrgast's kilns burn each year come down Kurohane's timber slides and over the badlands road. Vurrgast pays none of it in coin, settling in firebrick and in iron for Kurohane's watchtowers.

Timber and watching pay for the towers. Erevanth buys the walls and the orchard road at Thornwater on a standing 300 crowns a year, and Cuiveril takes four hundred bundles of pine a winter to keep the Coldhearth vault dry, settling in two places a year at the archive rather than coin. The slides feed the Firebrick Kilns and the Thornwater foundry both, and the foundry ash goes back up the ridge as orchard dressing without appearing in the contract. Nine names run all of this in Amasekan form on ground the Reach records office names, so a concession dispute has to be pleaded in Corvantine style: Ferrovane trains a clerk a year at Bellmark for that, at 600 silver and a first refusal on mast timber. Verrigan goes on entering bushels where the stores measure koku.

The archive burns four hundred bundles of pine a winter to keep the vault dry, slid down off the Matsugane bluffs and carted up the Pardah gravel. Kurohane takes payment as two places a year at Cuiveril rather than coin, and values the places above the freight.
-
Half the 5,000 cords the firebrick kilns burn each year comes down Kurohane's slides off the Matsugane pine and over the badlands road in the mule months. The hold pays no part of it in coin, settling instead in firebrick and in the pit iron for the watch-towers.
-
Erevanth's walls are twelve feet and its watch is Kurohane's, on a standing contract of 300 crowns a year covering the ridge track and the orchard road. What Erevanth buys is that nothing has come down off the Matsugane bluffs onto the Pardah gravel in ninety years, and both houses enter the contract as insurance.
The foundry's charcoal comes off Kurohane's slides, 1,800 cords a year burned on Pardah gravel because nothing grows on it, and the ash goes back up the ridge as orchard dressing. The ash is not mentioned in the contract.
-
Naskarre borrowed 7,000 silver against three years of charcoal to reline its furnace, and the note is held at Kurohane, five cells and two cultures east. Naskarre is hair-trigger, so a missed payment is the act of the house, and Kurohane's factors ride up the gorge road twice a year to be seen doing it.
-
Rice, water and firewood for Verrigan's counting house come down the concession track from Kurohane's stores. Kurohane measures out in koku and Verrigan enters bushels, and the difference is argued at every quarter's audit and then split.
-
The three watch-towers and the slide crews eat 2,600 hundredweight of rice and millet a year, worked up the Yatsuhoshi coast from Emberlin's terraces in eight-ton coasters, landed at the coast yards and carted along the ridge track. Kurohane pays the freight in pine and the grain in coin, and has still not persuaded the Reach to sell the towers a cistern share.
-
Draveholt licenses the coast yards below the Matsugane bluffs to build off Draveholt draughts, three hulls a year at a tenth of contract value. Kurohane collects the fee under its concession and keeps a tenth of it, and both houses enter that tenth as freight.
-
Ferrovane's court hall takes Kurohane's concession clerks for a year each, so that the ridge-track concession can be pleaded in Corvantine form when the Reach records office disputes it. Kurohane pays 600 silver a clerk and a first refusal on mast timber, and Ferrovane takes no clerk from the house on the other side of the same concession.
Coast-yard factors say the Matsugane Watch could put more men on the ridge than its towers have beds for, and none of them will guess how many. Said in Pardah Reach

One great black wing outstretched across a frontier watch-fire, a string of pierced coins hanging from the wing's leading edge.
Azure, a tower Or; in base a key Or; a bordure of warm iron. (Plate 20; nine living names.)
The field colour is the house's tradition and the bound edge is the state of its plate, and neither is the house's to choose.
