Cuiveril
Cuiveril teaches. Arcane colleges and archives at Ashenvale, and a standing arrangement to school half the officials of the houses around it. Cuiveril also retains plate-readers of its own.
Ask Cuiveril whose it is and the answer is the ring's. Its elves are a population it administers, which makes the house a reliable party to an agreement and an unmoving one in a quarrel. Its institutions are arcane. Mage-cities and chartered guilds run on written procedure, and the tradition supplies most of the plate-readers the ring argues in front of.
The holding
Coldhearth — the archive that rents readings by the sheet
Cold basalt vent above the tomb underground passages, an elven archive in a walled ash-garden compound
Coldhearth is a walled compound on a dead vent at the western edge of Pardah Reach, where the volcanic ground runs out over the burial caverns. Inside the wall there is an ash-garden and the archive vaults beneath it, kept dry by the vent and by four hundred bundles of Matsugane pine burned each winter. Nothing is grown here but the garden, and the house holds no cistern on the Reach register, so its water arrives by jar from the fourth surface opening three days south-west across the gravel. The Emberdeep road runs west from there to Belgrund's bar, and the burial tunnels under the compound belong to other people.
Connections
Teaching and reading fees pay for the vaults.
Allies takes this house’s side 4
Vaethril 02 Four marriages between the two houses in two hundred years. Cuiveril's archive will find Vaethril a legal precedent inside a week.
Kurohane 20 Four hundred bundles of pine a winter go down to Cuiveril to keep its vault dry. Kurohane takes payment as two student places a year rather than coin.
Drennhold 64 Drennhold sends four clerks a year to Cuiveril to be taught the boundary file, so both sides of the annual argument between the two registries are written by men taught in the same room from the same shelf. Cuiveril charges the dwarf hold the same rate it charges the Reach.
Vorlaine 68 Cuiveril's household water comes from Vorlaine's cisterns, sixty jars a day in the dry months at a price fixed in 812, and the garden takes as much again. Vorlaine has held that price for nine years and asked three times for a reader's place in the archive. Cuiveril grants it aloud and will not write it down.
Neutral trades, and no more than that 3
Brakkenstone 08 A dozen of Brakkenstone's clerks are always at Cuiveril, on a three-year course in record-keeping and water accounting at ninety silver a head a year. Brakkenstone pays in refined silver and takes a copy of the teaching tables as part of the fee.
Isperil 11 Isperil's whole practice rests on eleven old rulings it bought from Cuiveril's archive in 771, and it pays a yearly fee to go on reading them. The set it reads from is fifty years out of date.
Ravenscarp 41 Cuiveril has taught Ravenscarp's record clerks for six generations, twelve at a time on a three-year course, out of books Cuiveril owns.
Enemies has something open against it 2
Solmiryn 16 Cuiveril borrowed Solmiryn's charter roll to copy it in 91 AF and still has it, so every timber case that turns on the weighbridge is now argued from a Cuiveril copy at two silver a sheet. Two houses have asked the Forge who owns a dead house's papers, and the question has been shelved since 660.
Meldrath 55 Meldrath has admitted no student from the Reach since it died out, and Cuiveril has taken nine of its lecturers and its best course. Meldrath's officers still send the Forge a yearly list of the poaching.
The full account — 9 houses, 9 arrangements
Teaching and reading fees pay for the vaults. Ravenscarp's clerks come twelve at a time at forty crowns the head, Drennhold sends four a year to be taught the file on the underground passage boundary, and both sides of that hold's annual disagreement with the water records office are drafted by men who learned it off the same shelf. Nine of Wickstone's lecturers and its main incomes treaty-jurisprudence course came over after Meldrath went cold, and Wickstone's proctors still send the Forge a yearly list of the poaching. The Yewgate charter roll came in for copying in 91 AF and has not gone back, so Aurelmarch timber suits are pleaded out of Coldhearth copies at two silver the sheet. Vorlaine's water arrives at the rate set in 812, and the reader's place asked for in exchange is granted aloud but omitted from the written register.

Cuiveril has taught the records office clerks of the Natron Shelves for six generations, twelve at a time on a three-year course at forty crowns the head, and the reading of surface opening intervals is taught out of Cuiveril's own copies. Ravenscarp has asked for the copies and been offered lessons.
-
Drennhold sends four clerks a year down to Cuiveril to be taught the file on the underground passage boundary, so both sides of the annual disagreement between the two registries are drafted by men taught in the same room off the same shelf. Cuiveril charges the hold the Reach rate and leaves the coincidence out of the invoice.
-
Meldrath has taken no Reach entrant since the house went cold, and Cuiveril has since had nine of its lecturers and its main incomes treaty-jurisprudence course. Meldrath's proctors still send the Forge an annual list of Cuiveril's poaching, and the Forge still files it.
-
Cuiveril holds Solmiryn's charter roll, taken in for copying in 91 AF and still in its vault, and every Aurelmarch timber suit turning on the ridge-gap weighbridge is now pleaded from a Cuiveril copy at two silver the sheet. Two Corvantine houses have asked the Forge who owns a cracked house's papers, and the question has been held over since 660.
-
A dozen of Brakkenstone's test clerks are at Cuiveril at any time, on a three-year course in records office form and Sekhemrite water accounting at ninety silver a head a year. Brakkenstone pays in refined silver by weight and takes a copy of the test tables as part of the fee, which is the only part of the arrangement its clan assembly has ever approved.
-
Isperil's practice runs on the set of the eleven indirect-killing rulings it bought from Cuiveril's archive in 771, and the reading fee is renewed annually while the copies are not. Cuiveril has offered the current set four times, at a price Isperil has four times declined.
-
Cuiveril draws its household water off Vorlaine's cisterns, sixty jars a day in the dry months at a rate fixed by the settlement of 812, and the ash-garden takes as much again. Vorlaine has held the rate for nine years and asked three times for a reader's place in the archive, which Cuiveril grants aloud and will not write down.
-
The archive burns four hundred bundles of pine a winter to keep the vault dry, slid down off the Matsugane bluffs and carted up the Pardah gravel. Kurohane takes payment as two places a year at Cuiveril rather than coin, and values the places above the freight.
-
Four marriages between Vaethril and Cuiveril in two centuries, which is how Vaethril's filings reach a Lorehall willing to find a precedent at short notice. Cuiveril's archivists put the arrangement no higher than kinship.
Registrars in the Reach say Coldhearth's readers draft for both sides in more cases than its invoices show, though no filing has tested the claim. Said in Pardah Reach
