Ravenscarp
The house sells counsel on the Accords themselves — among the most lucrative and most dangerous trades in the world, and Nine Rivers is full of people who bill by the clause. A loan book runs alongside the main business.
Ravenscarp is Undivided. It wears human shape because a Wright at the Forge must wear something, and it treats an appeal to common blood as a category error. Arcane institutions govern here. The house keeps its precedents in order, and its objections at the Forge arrive in writing before they arrive in person. An occult establishment works alongside the arcane institutions. Their jurisdictions overlap at Nine Rivers's gate, river court or marriage table, and neither will yield its place.
The holding
the burial salt Shelves — the records office stair at the seventh surface opening
Dry limestone shelving above the Pardah's seventh surface opening, tomb underground passages, and the records office stair
The Pardah runs underground through most of the Reach and comes up at intervals the water records office has recorded since before the signing, and the seventh of them lies under the Natron Shelves. Dry limestone shelving above it carries the burial tunnels, the drying floors and the records office stair, where the night's level is read off a marked riser before the office opens. The rock yields burial salt and will not hold a crop, so grain comes up the Pardah by pilot out of Sirenthal, 4,000 hundredweight a year. Thornwater's orchard wall stands two days south and the Matsugane bluffs close the eastern horizon.
Connections
Two incomes come off the shelves: burial in dry burial caves with the carriage stamps that go with it, and the drafting of other houses' pleadings.
Allies takes this house’s side 3
Ordwaine 18 Ravenscarp's junior registrars spend a year at Ordwaine learning the order documents must be signed in, because coastal families keep having burial papers thrown out over it. The fee is paid in burial salt and in dry storage for Ordwaine's own dead.
Meketri 37 Ravenscarp is hired to argue that Meketri is not land under the treaty because it appears in no survey, which suits Meketri exactly until somebody asks who owns its nine wells. The fee is paid in cattle, and the case is filed under Ravenscarp's own name.
Drennhold 64 Ravenscarp writes the reply to Drennhold's annual boundary claim, and has done since 803, paid for out of tomb rents. Drennhold files its own answer before reading the reply, and both houses have put in writing that this saves everybody a fortnight.
Neutral trades, and no more than that 5
Steinvald 19 The two have argued opposite sides three times over how much land a house holds, most recently over whether Emberkeel is one holding or fourteen tunnels. Steinvald counts gates as they look from the air and Ravenscarp counts surveyed acres, and both quote the same 118 AF ruling that was written to settle it.
Vantrose 28 Vantrose has three times refused to accept a water share as security, because no office can prove a cistern still exists sixty years later, and Ravenscarp has three times filed that refusal as evidence in its own case. Both houses profit if the treaty holds, both say so in writing, and they have been on opposite sides of this for eleven years.
Cuiveril 43 Cuiveril has taught Ravenscarp's record clerks for six generations, twelve at a time on a three-year course, out of books Cuiveril owns.
Aelvarion 54 Every hundredweight of grain that reaches Ravenscarp comes upriver through Aelvarion with one of its pilots aboard, and Aelvarion takes a twelfth for it. Aelvarion has no fresh water of its own and buys two shares from Ravenscarp, re-priced in any year the flood is late. That has been three years in five.
Verrigan 75 Ravenscarp lends Verrigan its working money each season against the landing dues, and has renewed it every year since 811. Verrigan is quietly positioned for the day the ring stops mattering and Ravenscarp is not, and the loan is most of what keeps the two civil.
Enemies has something open against it 4
Erevanth 49 Erevanth's foundry casts the cistern gates, sluices and pump parts Ravenscarp's water system runs on, forty tons a year. Ravenscarp is at the same time nine years into an attempt to have Erevanth's charter downgraded from a right that stands on its own to a permission the water office granted, and treats the two as unrelated matters.
Vorlaine 68 Vorlaine controls the upper cisterns and Ravenscarp the lower stair, and Ravenscarp has petitioned four times to have Vorlaine's draw capped in a dry year. Vorlaine is quietly positioned for the day the water office stops mattering, Ravenscarp cannot survive that day, and each of them knows which way the other faces.
Marrowe 70 Ravenscarp charges Marrowe's carts extra on any load that has passed near Marrowe's burning ground, and six legal opinions have been written on whether that is a fee or a punishment, each paid for by the house that wanted its answer. Ravenscarp also hires Marrowe to write its water cases, because an opinion from a foreign firm cannot be waved away at the Forge as self-interest.
Valdrenne 71 Valdrenne holds 140 pledges on grain wharves and has nobody alive who can release any of them, so eleven debtors hired Ravenscarp to establish who can. Ravenscarp has filed twice and been told the register is not amended for dead houses. Its own practice relies on that answer everywhere else.
The full account — 12 houses, 15 arrangements
Two incomes come off the shelves: burial in dry burial caves with the carriage stamps that go with it, and the drafting of other houses' pleadings. Thirteen names of ironletters have written the Reach's annual reply to Drennhold's boundary claim since 803, sealed by the records office and billed to the tomb rents. Marrowe is retained at eight crowns the page because a Wetstone opinion cannot be dismissed at the Forge as Reach special pleading, and the same stair charges Wetstone's carts a surcharge on any load that has passed near Marrowe's burning ground. Erevanth is sued over the Thornwater charter in one season and paid for forty tons of cistern gates in the next. Cuiveril has schooled the records office clerks for six generations and still declines to hand back the copies they read from.

The records office stair charges Marrowe's carts a surcharge on every load that has passed within sight of Marrowe's burning ground. Six Ironletter opinions have been written on whether the surcharge is a rate or a penalty, and each was paid for by the house that wanted its answer.
Marrowe drafts the Reach pleadings on the water-share security question at eight crowns the page, and is the only Amasekan practice inside the Reach the records office will take a filing from. Ravenscarp retains it because a Marrowe opinion cannot be dismissed at the Forge as Sekhemri special pleading.

Ravenscarp has drafted the Reach's annual reply to the underground passage boundary' boundary claim since 803, sealed by the water records office and paid for out of tomb rents. Drennhold files its own answer before reading the reply, and both houses have put in writing that the practice saves everybody a fortnight.
-
Erevanth's charter predates the water records office, and Ravenscarp has spent nine years trying to have it read as a grant the records office confirmed rather than a right standing outside it. Erevanth answers each filing in the same four lines and offers no terms, because the orchard's draw is the one call on the seventh surface opening the records office cannot cap.
Erevanth's foundry casts the records office's cistern gates, sluice plates and pump barrels, forty tons a year to the Natron Shelves' own patterns. Ravenscarp is suing the charter and buying the castings in the same season, and treats the two as unrelated matters.
-
Valdrenne's loan book still carries 140 pledges on Ferravant grain wharves with no living name able to discharge any of them, so eleven debtors retained Ravenscarp to establish who may. The Natron Shelves has filed twice and been told the register is not amended for cold houses, which is the same answer its own practice depends on everywhere else.
-
Aelvarion has no fresh water on the silt island and holds two registered shares off the Pardah's seventh surface opening, carried down in cask by the boats that bring burial salt. The records office revises the rate in any year the surface opening runs late, and it has run late three years in five.
Every hundredweight of grain that reaches the Natron Shelves comes up the Pardah through Aelvarion, 4,000 a year with a pilot aboard for each load, because there is no way past the silt without one. Aelvarion takes a twelfth, and Ravenscarp has costed a road alternative four times in sixty years without finding one.
-
Vorlaine holds the cisterns at the fourth surface opening and Ravenscarp keeps the records office stair at the seventh, and the Natron Shelves have petitioned four times to have the upper draw capped in a dry year. Vorlaine is quietly positioned for the day the records office stops meaning anything, Ravenscarp cannot survive that day, and each of them knows which way the other faces.
-
Cuiveril has taught the records office clerks of the Natron Shelves for six generations, twelve at a time on a three-year course at forty crowns the head, and the reading of surface opening intervals is taught out of Cuiveril's own copies. Ravenscarp has asked for the copies and been offered lessons.
-
Vantrose has three times declined a Reach water share as security, on the ground that no Corvantine records office can produce a cistern sixty years later, and Ravenscarp has three times filed the refusal at the Forge as evidence for the security petition. Both houses profit if the Accords hold, both say so in writing, and they have been on opposite sides of this for eleven years.
-
Steinvald and the Natron Shelves have argued Clause II land against each other three times, most recently over whether Emberkeel is one holding or fourteen underground passages: Steinvald pleads the gate count as it reads from the air, Ravenscarp pleads surveyed acre. Both cite the ruling of 118 AF, drafted to settle the point, and it has been read four ways since.
-
Ravenscarp's junior registrars spend a year at Ordwaine on seal seating order, since coast families buying burial on the Natron Shelves keep having the papers voided over the order the seals went on. The fee is paid in burial salt and in dry-rock storage for the archive's own dead, which no Amaseki house on the coast will admit to using.
Clerks in the Reach say the Natron Shelves' tomb rents exceed the figures shown in its public summaries. Said in Pardah Reach
