Draveholt

Rushmere, the Yatsuhoshi Coast · Warm iron · 17 living names

Archives and lecture halls. Draveholt sells literacy and procedure to powers that cannot govern without them. Its own works supply what Draveholt would otherwise buy.

Draveholt is Kinsworn, and means it. Its Wright wears human shape as a member of that people: the oldest and largest member of the family, with its gods, inheritance law and opinion of the neighbours. Its position can be negotiated, but its loyalties can be shamed. Its institutions are arcane: literate, incremental, and content to win an argument in the thirtieth year of it. The treaty is an instrument to them, to be read closely and used.

Shiroganeura — the yard that sells draughts rather than hulls

hex 14,19 · cell r5c4 · coast Marked: the model loft above the tidal slipways

Laterite bluff over a Yatsuhoshi Coast inlet: slipways and mast ponds below, a walled drawing office and model loft above, one tidal approach.

The bluff is laterite, red and soft enough to cut with a spade, standing forty feet over an inlet of the Yatsuhoshi Coast. Mast ponds and three slipways lie below it and fill on the tide; the walled drawing office, the model loft and the timber sheds stand on top, out of the damp. One approach, so a hull leaves on the top of the water or waits a fortnight. Camphor forest closes in behind, which is why the yard's long timber comes in by raft from the Aurelmarch ridge. Hoshinoseki's toll pier is two days west and Inamura's terraces begin where the cart track leaves the coast.

Drawings leave Shiroganeura more often than hulls do. Kurohane's coast yards build three a year off those draughts at a tenth of contract value, and Serathorne's customs surveyors learn tonnage in the drawing office, paid against harbour dues on the yard's launches rather than in silver. Mast oak off Maeryvane's Elderfold comes under a contract written in survey feet and settled in shaku, so the two copies carry different totals. Vurrgast's bar iron is weighed on the hold's hundredweight and again on the yard's kan, and the lower figure is paid. The loft's hands are kin to the house and eat Emberlin rice, half of it settled in free places at the drawing office. Mast timber fee is still booked against a Yewgate charter, and Aldemarch's garrison has held the weighbridge that would settle it since that plate cracked.

  • out 20 Kurohane licence

Draveholt licenses the coast yards below the Matsugane bluffs to build off Draveholt draughts, three hulls a year at a tenth of contract value. Kurohane collects the fee under its concession and keeps a tenth of it, and both houses enter that tenth as freight.

  • out 79 Kazdrun schooling

The model loft at Draveholt takes two of Kazdrun's iron furnace masters each winter, and the fee is a tenth of the bog-iron output valued at Vurrgast's settlement price. Draveholt teaches pattern-casting and keeps the drawings, so Kazdrun can build to them and cannot sell them on.

  • out 63 Serathorne schooling

Serathorne's customs surveyors take two years in the drawing office learning tonnage measurement, at three koku a head a term. Serathorne pays the fee against the harbour dues on Draveholt's launches rather than in silver.

  • out 53 Aldemarch claim

Draveholt still books its mast timber fee against a Solmiryn charter, and since that plate cracked Solmiryn's weighbridge has been held by Aldemarch's ward garrison. Draveholt has demanded production of the charter four times and been sent a survey extract instead.

  • out · in 04 Talionwe ore · licence

Iron-shod rollers, cradle work and three hundred fathom of chain for Talionwe's portage come out of Draveholt's yard on an order renewed every seventh year. Talionwe pays on time and argues every quotation down.

A hull sold at the Sixtongue Roads needs a title the harbour court will hear, and Talionwe registers Draveholt's sales for a twentieth of the price. That court has refused Amasekan seal seating order in three cases out of four, which is what the twentieth is really buying.

  • in 24 Maeryvane timber

Forty mast trees and eight hundred feet of oak knee timber come down from Maeryvane to Draveholt's mast ponds every winter, rafted along the coast because the ridge road will not take the length. The quantity is written in Corvantine survey feet and paid in Amasekan shaku, so there are two copies of the contract and they do not agree.

  • in 52 Emberlin grain

Emberlin sends five hundred koku a year down the cart track to feed the slipway hands and the model loft. Half of it is settled in free places at the drawing office for Emberlin's officers' sons, which the yard's accounts show as a fee received and still outstanding.

  • Bar iron, spikes and two hundred hundredweight of anchor stock come off Vurrgast, down the iron road and round to Draveholt by inlet boat. Everything is weighed twice, once on the hold's hundredweight and once on the yard's kan, and Draveholt pays the lower of the two figures.

Factors at the free ports price a Shiroganeura draught as though the yard built the hulls, a claim the drawing office leaves unanswered. Said in the Yatsuhoshi Coast

Arms

A scholar's astrolabe with one of its rings replaced by a forged iron hoop still bright from the hammer, rushes below, a five-petalled rose at the base.

The Forge's register entry for Draveholt

Azure, party per pale by a line Or, a book open and a rose Or; in base a hammer Or; a bordure of warm iron. (Plate 40; seventeen living names.)

The field colour is the house's tradition and the bound edge is the state of its plate, and neither is the house's to choose.
