Emberlin
What Emberlin sells is force, professionally organised. Its own troops can threaten a neighbour without waiting for a chartered company. Emberlin also holds farmland.
Ask Emberlin whose it is and the answer is the ring's. Its humans are a population it administers, which makes the house a reliable party to an agreement and an unmoving one in a quarrel. Its institutions are primal. The border is a wide thing rather than a line, the herds move with the season, and the treaty reaches Ganderford at about the strength of a rumour. A divine establishment stands beside the primal one. They share Ganderford and dispute the order of precedence at every ceremony that has one.
The holding
Inamura — the house that is paid in seating order
Terraced red loam under camphor forest, rice below, a dry muster field, cart track inland.
Terraces climb from wet rice on the lower Emberrun to the camphor edge, red loam benched and banked, and the banks are rebuilt every year whether the flood comes or not. Above the highest bench the ground goes dry and level, which is where the muster field is and why nothing is sown on it; the shrine at its head keeps the roll. A cart track runs inland from the village towards the badlands road, and eight-ton coasters load at the inlet below. Nimrothel's gate is a day and a half off along the river road, and the toll pier at the Emberrun mouth and the Kazenokami bluff both take Inamura carts.
Connections
Seven names, most holding a commission somewhere, and the ledger runs short of coin and long of rice.
Allies takes this house’s side 5
Vaethril 02 Emberlin's two mercenary companies serve under papers Vaethril holds, so no court record shows Emberlin sending soldiers onto dwarf ground. It is the only reason Emberlin can take work north of the mountains at all.
Ordwaine 18 Six hundred koku a year go up the causeway to feed Ordwaine's lecture halls and kitchens. A third of the price is written off against places for Emberlin's officers.
Yatagaru 33 Yatagaru buys Emberlin's rice bills at a discount and holds the next two harvests as security, and pays for repairs to the terrace banks out of its own pocket, because a flood costs it as much as it costs Emberlin. Grain comes back the other way to feed Yatagaru's own people, priced against the same discount, so the two settle once a year and very little silver moves.
Draveholt 40 Emberlin sends five hundred koku a year down the track to feed Draveholt's shipwrights and drawing office. Half is settled in free places at the drawing office for Emberlin's officers' sons.
Serathorne 63 Nine hundred koku a year go from Emberlin's terraces to Serathorne's customs yard, paid for not in coin but in precedence: Emberlin's envoy is seated ahead of two older houses at court, and three of them have written to complain. Sixty of Emberlin's soldiers also guard the toll pier through the spring, and Emberlin's price for another sixty is a look at the pier's cargo book, refused six years running.
Neutral trades, and no more than that 3
Ashcrole 09 Two hundred koku of rice a year arrive by boat, nothing growing on a shell ridge behind a mangrove. It is everything the hall eats.
Kurohane 20 Kurohane's three watchtowers and its work crews eat 2,600 hundredweight of rice and millet a year, shipped up the coast in small boats and carted along the ridge. Kurohane pays the freight in timber and the grain in coin.
Vantrose 28 Vantrose has no land to grow anything on and eats Emberlin's rice and buckwheat, carted up in the months the road is open and stored at the gate. Its pilgrim season falls when the price runs a third higher.

Seven names, most holding a commission somewhere, and the ledger runs short of coin and long of rice. Nine hundred koku go to Serathorne, five hundred down the cart track to Draveholt's slipway hands, six hundred up the fen causeway to Ordwaine, four hundred through the Nimrothel gate to a house Emberlin is suing. Sixty spears off the muster field stand on Serathorne's toll pier through the spring run at four bars the month, and the price of a second sixty is a sight of the pier's tonnage book, refused for six years. Yatagaru discounts the rice bills at a tenth against the next two harvests and pays for the terrace banks itself. The suit against Lysathiel turns on which of two seals went on first, and no coast court has yet been willing to say.

The Milestone Fee is fed on Emberlin rice and buckwheat carried up the badlands road in the cart months and stored in the weigh-house, since Vantrose has no ground to grow anything on. The chapel's pilgrim season falls in the mule months, when the price runs a third higher and the vault pays it.
-
The three watch-towers and the slide crews eat 2,600 hundredweight of rice and millet a year, worked up the Yatsuhoshi coast from Emberlin's terraces in eight-ton coasters, landed at the coast yards and carted along the ridge track. Kurohane pays the freight in pine and the grain in coin, and has still not persuaded the Reach to sell the towers a cistern share.

Emberlin sends five hundred koku a year down the cart track to feed the slipway hands and the model loft. Half of it is settled in free places at the drawing office for Emberlin's officers' sons, which the yard's accounts show as a fee received and still outstanding.
-
Nine hundred koku a year go from Emberlin's terraces to the customs yard and the toll pier. Serathorne pays in seating order rather than coin, seating the Emberlin envoy ahead of two older houses at the Yatsuhoshi audience, and three of those houses have written to the court about it.
Sixty spears off Emberlin's muster field stand on the toll pier through the spring run, victualled by Serathorne at four bars the month. Emberlin's price for a second sixty is a sight of the pier's tonnage book, which Serathorne has refused for six years running.
-
Four hundred koku a year go up the gated causeway into the compound, off the same terraces whose owner is suing Lysathiel, at a price the coast court fixed and neither side will reopen. The carts are counted at the gate by both houses' clerks standing a yard apart.
Emberlin is suing to void Lysathiel's sixty-year cutting lease on the ground that the junior who sealed it sealed ahead of his senior, which on this coast makes an instrument worthless whatever its terms say. Lysathiel's answer is that no Amaseki court has jurisdiction over a charter granted to a house older than the coast rolls.
-
Six hundred koku a year go up the fen causeway to the lecture yards and the archive kitchens. A third is remitted against places for Emberlin's officers, and Ordwaine keeps that part off the published fee schedule.
-
Rice for the agency hall comes to the reed landings by boat, two hundred koku a year, since nothing on a shell ridge behind a mangrove will grow it. The last two seasons arrived short with a note about the sandbar, and Ashcrole paid in full both times without asking for the note to be explained.
-
Yatagaru's drill ground and loan house feed on rice landed at the stone ramp, three hundred and fifty koku a year. Yatagaru sets the price against the discount it charges Emberlin on the same crop, so the two houses settle once a year and move very little silver.
Yatagaru's loan house discounts Emberlin's rice bills at a tenth and holds the next two harvests as security. A short flood on the lower Emberrun is Yatagaru's exposure as much as Emberlin's, which is why the loan house pays for the terrace bank repairs out of its own account.
-
Vaethril holds the company charter under which Emberlin's two field companies serve north of the spine at six per cent of the contract, so that no Amasekan court roll shows a house sending men onto Kazdrunn ground. Vaethril has twice held charters for companies hired against each other in the same season and billed both.
The Forge has it that Inamura's spears stand further afield than the toll pier in some seasons, and that Yatagaru's clerks could name the rate. Said in the Yatsuhoshi Coast
