Lysathiel
Information is the trade. Lysathiel rules partly from behind other people's offices, and Greymere is quieter than its accounts suggest it should be. Lysathiel holds a second portfolio in paper.
Lysathiel calls its position Contemporary. It treats its relationship with elves as one between contemporaries, a distinction it has defended at the Forge since the signing. The tradition is primal: pasture, thin settlement, and law kept by memory. Its adherence to the Accords is the loosest in the ring. An arcane establishment sits alongside the primal institutions and answers separately to the house. Their overlap at the marriage table is the one nobody has divided.
The holding
Nimrothel — the counting house behind the causeway gate
Walled elven compound on a grey old river bend in leased Yatsuhoshi forest, one gated causeway.
The lower Emberrun left an old river bend here when it shifted, silted at both ends and grey with it, and eleven walled acres stand inside the loop. One causeway crosses the dead water to a gate shut at dusk out of habit. The forest on the neck is held on a lease, sixty years of cutting rights in camphor and hardwood written before the coast rolls carried this ground at all. Inamura's terraces start above the loop on the river road, the toll pier at the Emberrun mouth is five days down, and the free-port courts are a week by water for anyone who cannot be heard nearer.
Connections
Books are kept at Nimrothel for people who would rather not appear in them.

Duskenmoor 06 Lysathiel is paid to keep the name of Duskenmoor's timber buyer from being read out at the assembly, and takes first pick of the mast timber instead of coin. A house with four living members cannot survive being named in public, so Lysathiel has not needed to raise its price in nine years.
Ashcrole 09 Ashcrole's money comes through a broker at Serathorne, and Lysathiel's name is on none of the paperwork. It has funded the hall for eleven years.
Drusenberg 62 Lysathiel bought a third of Drusenberg's Meldrath debts in 812 at a tenth under their value and asked nothing about whose name was on them. The sale is recorded on both sides as a routine rebalancing.
Drennhold 64 Lysathiel supplies Drennhold with the names, postings and debts of every clerk in the Reach's record office, for 2,000 silver renewed each midwinter. It sells the service to nobody else east of the mountains, and Drennhold's cipher office keeps the file rather than its border officers.
Quellborne 66 One of Quellborne's four law offices has been let without a break since 787 to a client recorded only as an account, and every case brought out of that office has been against a house on the same river. The rent arrives quarterly by draft on Lysathiel's counting house.

Shizuhana 51 Lysathiel bought Shizuhana's debts at two-fifths of their value the year the house died out, holds first claim on its landing fees, and has taken over the informant network Shizuhana ran, paying the same men on the same days. Shizuhana's ledgers still record those payments as its own.
Emberlin 52 Emberlin is suing to cancel Lysathiel's sixty-year timber lease because the junior who signed it signed ahead of his senior, which on that coast makes a document worthless whatever it says, and Lysathiel answers that no local court can touch a charter granted to a house older than the coast records. Four hundred koku a year still go up into the compound off those same terraces, counted at the gate by both houses' clerks standing a yard apart.

Books are kept at Nimrothel for people who would rather not appear in them. A third of Drusenberg's Aurel Wood paper was bought in 812 at ninety in the hundred with no question about the name, Wraymoor's acceptances are re-discounted at a rate that prices three names rather than the sum, and the Shirasu retainers run through a Hoshinoseki bill-broker in whose papers Lysathiel does not appear. An elder house on this coast pays a broker's fifth on every filing, converts a measure on every rice contract, and buys four hundred koku a year off the same Emberlin suing to void the cutting lease. The dead go north to the ridge reaches, the seating order roll having no shelf for them. A clerk goes up each quarter to establish who still answers the door at Inaribashi, and on whose authority.
-
Lysathiel has taken over the Emberrun informant lines Shizuhana ran before the roll closed, paying the same men out of Lysathiel on the same quarter days. Shizuhana's ledgers still enter the payments as outgoing, which is either a clerk's habit or a claim, and Lysathiel has left the question alone.
Lysathiel bought Shizuhana's Emberrun paper at forty in the hundred the year that plate went cold, and holds first claim on the landing dues. A clerk goes up from Lysathiel every quarter to establish who is still answering the door at Shizuhana and on whose authority.
-
Lysathiel bought a third of Drusenberg's Meldrath paper in 812 AF at ninety in the hundred and asked nothing about the name on it. Drusenberg's clerks describe the sale as a rebalancing and Lysathiel's describe it as an accommodation between old counterparties.
-
Lysathiel supplies Drennhold with the names, postings and arrears of every clerk who reads the Reach underground passage records office, on a retainer of 2,000 silver renewed each Midwinter. Lysathiel sells the service to nobody else east of the spine, and the file is kept by Drennhold's cipher office rather than by its marchwardens.
-
Lysathiel is paid to keep the name of Duskenmoor's timber buyer out of the Hrimgard assembly reading aloud, and takes first refusal on Duskenmoor's mast stock instead of coin. A Vaskarni house in Falkvald country with four names in it cannot afford to be formally read, and Lysathiel has not had to raise the price in nine years.
-
Ashcrole's agency hall's retainers are funded through a Serathorne bill-broker and Lysathiel appears nowhere in the retainer. The free-port bar has assumed for eleven years that Lysathiel is the money behind it and cannot prove so.
-
Lysathiel re-discounts Wraymoor's acceptances at a rate that prices three names rather than the sum on the paper, and holds the records office's own vault as security. Wraymoor copies every instrument twice, once for the Corvantine records office and once for Lysathiel's clerks, and pays for both copies.

One of the Staple's four chartered yards has been let without a break since 787 to a principal Quellborne records only as an account, and every action brought out of that yard since has been against a house on the Emberrun. The rent arrives quarterly by draft on Lysathiel's counting house, which is as far as the public record goes.
-
Four hundred koku a year go up the gated causeway into the compound, off the same terraces whose owner is suing Lysathiel, at a price the coast court fixed and neither side will reopen. The carts are counted at the gate by both houses' clerks standing a yard apart.
Emberlin is suing to void Lysathiel's sixty-year cutting lease on the ground that the junior who sealed it sealed ahead of his senior, which on this coast makes an instrument worthless whatever its terms say. Lysathiel's answer is that no Amaseki court has jurisdiction over a charter granted to a house older than the coast rolls.

Arms
A heron's eye reflected in grey mere water, one drowned coin visible inside the pupil.
Vert, an eye and a mullet Or, borne side by side, equal, and undivided; in base a key Or; a chief Azure; a bordure of warm iron. (Plate 56; twenty-five living names.)
The field colour is the house's tradition and the bound edge is the state of its plate, and neither is the house's to choose.
