Quellborne
The house lives on commissions. Somebody wants something done at one remove, and Quellborne keeps the register of people who will do it. Quellborne also works the Forge.
Quellborne is Undivided. Its shape is an instrument, and its loyalty runs to the roughly two hundred beings in the world it considers truly relevant. A petitioner gets further with an offer than with an appeal to local kinship. Its institutions are divine, and doctrine settles what interest would otherwise decide. The tradition signed last, and the reasons are still preached at Bridgefoot. An arcane establishment stands beside the divine one. They share Bridgefoot and dispute the order of precedence at every ceremony that has one.
The holding
the Aurelmarch Staple — the four chartered yards at Bridgefoot
Gravel gravel banks at the head of navigation, lime-mortared transfer sheds, four chartered agency yards behind
The Emberrun stops taking barges at Bridgefoot, where the current slackens over gravel gravel banks and a lime-mortared range of transfer sheds runs along them, with four chartered agency yards on the flat behind. Everything bound for the Forge is broken out of hulls here and loaded onto pack trains for the badlands stage; everything coming down off the spine goes the other way into barges for the Yatsuhoshi Coast. The road above the gravel banks is Kazdrunn ground and carries Gundvarr's weighing yard. Sekhemra's iron furnace smoke stands east at the spine foot, the Hoshimura landing lies two days downstream, and the paved Solmarch highway is three days west across the plain.
Connections
Agency work at Bridgefoot means appearing in court for people the house declines to name, and twenty-six names and four yards do very little else.
Allies takes this house’s side 3
Aldemarch 53 Quellborne arranged Aldemarch's marriage settlement in 819 and took its fee as a permanent first refusal on Aldemarch's surplus grain, used twice since. That first refusal is why the barges keep loading.
Lysathiel 56 One of Quellborne's four law offices has been let without a break since 787 to a client recorded only as an account, and every case brought out of that office has been against a house on the same river. The rent arrives quarterly by draft on Lysathiel's counting house.
Kazdrun 79 Quellborne arranged the marriage that brought a foreign-raised heir into Kazdrun in 799, and took its fee as a nine-year exemption at the weighing yard. That heir is seated below the youngest gate-holder at the clan assembly, may not speak for the gate, and holds Kazdrun as a ward rather than by right.
Neutral trades, and no more than that 2
Serathorne 63 Cargo unloaded at Quellborne has to clear customs again where the river reaches the sea, so Quellborne's four law offices buy Serathorne's clearance by the season rather than argue every ship. The price rose a fifth at the last revision.
Vaddrek 81 Quellborne's four law offices are fed on 900 hundredweight of Vaddrek's rye a year, paid for in cartage licences rather than coin. Vaddrek would rather have the money and takes the licences because the alternative is selling into Gundvarr's market.
Enemies has something open against it 4
Brakkenstone 08 One of Quellborne's law offices has joined the water case against Brakkenstone on behalf of shippers it refuses to name, listing the barges delayed and the cargo lost but no owner for either.
Solmiryn 16 Solmiryn's business licences were split up in the first century, and Quellborne has worked two of them ever since under a confirmation that still names Solmiryn as the grantor. Ythelas objects whenever it is read out.
Sekhemra 25 Quellborne hires Sekhemra's riders for the desert stage of its Forge convoys, has used no other company since 810, and will not put its reason in writing. It also works for the tax survey, and has put Sekhemra's camp back on the rolls nine years running at a rate Sekhemra pays late and under protest.
Gundvarr 44 Quellborne owns the river wharves and Gundvarr the weighing yard on the road above them, and the porterage rates were changed in 818 without the wharves hearing until the first pack train refused to load. Every shipper on that road can recite what porterage used to cost.
The full account — 9 houses, 10 arrangements
Agency work at Bridgefoot means appearing in court for people the house declines to name, and twenty-six names and four yards do very little else. One yard has entered against Brakkenstone in the headwater suit, giving the barges delayed and the tonnage lost and no owner for either. Another has been let without a break since 787 to a principal the roll records as an account, whose rent arrives quarterly by draft on Lysathiel's counting house at Nimrothel. The Staple acts for the survey against Sekhemra's wintering grass, pays Vaddrek in cartage licences rather than coin for its rye, and has hired Sekhemra's riders for the badlands stage every year since 810 without putting the reason in writing. Gundvarr revised the porterage schedule in 818, and the wharves heard of it when the first pack train refused to load.
-
Quellborne holds the gravel gravel banks and Gundvarr holds the cart weighing yard on the road above them, and the porterage schedule was revised in 818 without the wharves hearing of it until the first pack train refused to load. Every Aurelmarch shipper can recite what porterage cost before the revision, and all of them still ship.
-
One of the Staple's four chartered yards has been let without a break since 787 to a principal Quellborne records only as an account, and every action brought out of that yard since has been against a house on the Emberrun. The rent arrives quarterly by draft on Lysathiel's counting house, which is as far as the public record goes.
-
Quellborne acts for the survey on the assessment of Sekhemra's grass and has re-entered the camp on the roll in each of the last nine years, at a rate Sekhemra pays late and under protest. The catfolk house points at Pardahni's herds, who pay nothing at all, and the census answers that the item is outstanding and has been for six hundred years.
The Staple's pack trains to the Forge hire Sekhemra's riders for the badlands stage at nine crowns the train, which is the whole of what the Wintering's Marchward side earns. Quellborne renews annually, has used no other company since 810, and will not put its reason in writing.
-
Quellborne brokered Aldemarch's settlement of 819 and took its fee as a standing right of pre-emption over Aldemarch's Solmarch granary surplus, exercised twice since. Aldemarch's clerks think the fee high and concede that the pre-emption is why the barges keep loading.
-
The second of Quellborne's chartered yards has entered an appearance against Brakkenstone in the headwater suit on behalf of shippers it declines to name. Quellborne's filing gives the barges delayed and the tonnage lost, and no owner for either.
-
Quellborne brokered the match that brought a Corvantine heir, raised Undivided, into Kazdrun in 799, and took its fee as a nine-year exemption at the weighing yard. At the clan assembly the heir is seated below the youngest gate-holder, may not answer for the gate, and holds Kazdrun as a wardship rather than by right, which four neighbouring holds have already put in writing.
-
The four agency yards behind the transfer sheds are fed on Ironfurrow rye, 900 hundredweight a year down the oxen road, and Quellborne pays in cartage licences for the Emberrun barges instead of coin. Vaddrek would rather have the coin and takes the licences because the alternative is selling into Gundvarr's market.
-
A cargo broken out of barges at Quellborne is cleared again where the Emberrun reaches salt water, and Quellborne's four agency yards buy Serathorne's through-clearance by the season rather than argue it hull by hull. The season price rose a fifth at the last revision and Quellborne's yards paid it without lodging an appeal.
Shippers on the Solmarch say two Bridgefoot yards file for one principal, and Quellborne's clerks answer that the roll records charter holders and takes no interest in clients. Said in the Aurelmarch

Arms
A spring welling up at the foot of a bridge pier, a sealed commission floating on the water, a coronet resting on the bridge rail above.
Or, a writ sealed Gules; in base a coronet Gules; a chief Azure; a bordure of warm iron. (Plate 66; twenty-six living names.)
The field colour is the house's tradition and the bound edge is the state of its plate, and neither is the house's to choose.
