Vaddrek
Grain and herds make up the tax base. The work is plain and the first thing burned in any war that reaches Blackfell. Vaddrek keeps forges of its own.
The Wright of Vaddrek is a dwarf first. It sits at its own people's tables, marries into them where the law allows, and takes an insult to them as an insult. Its institutions are primal: thin borders and herding country, with the weakest adherence to the Accords. A wyrm in a trackless waste owes nobody much. A divine establishment stands beside the primal one. They share Blackfell and dispute the order of precedence at every ceremony that has one.
The holding
the Ironfurrow Concession — the dwarf hold that sells grain downhill
Stair cut into a Corvantine foothill, walled granges, a iron furnace, oxen road down to the plain
Where the Aurelmarch plain meets the first of the spine's foothills a stair is cut into the limestone, and the gate at its head answers to Blackfell. Six walled granges stand on the terraced slope below, oats, barley and rye on ground the survey rates poor and the granges have marled for two centuries. A iron furnace works at the stair foot on combe charcoal and ore carted off the badlands drifts, and the oxen road drops from the weighing yard to the paved Solmarch highway. Bellmark's barge head is a week west by the road round the mountain, Gundvarr's oat terrace lies east across the Emberrun, and the Aurel Wood ditch runs along the foot of the slope.
Connections
The concession earns twice over, once off grain and once off iron, and eleven names hold the gate both are billed under.
Allies takes this house’s side 5
Sorrenmark 14 Sorrenmark's soldiers patrol the road down from Vaddrek's ironworks, and Vaddrek pays two hundred quarters of oats a season for it. A dwarf hold hiring human soldiers is remarked on at both ends of the road, and both houses would rather be talked about than lose the ironworks to raiders.
Emberkeel 42 Four hundred quarters of oats and barley come up the road each autumn, which is most of what Emberkeel eats that its mushroom cellars do not grow. Part of the price is that Emberkeel's clerks leave Vaddrek's weighing yard out of what they report to the tax assessors.
Ferrovane 50 Ferrovane's court, gaol and staff are fed off Vaddrek's farms under a contract renewed with Vaddrek's mining licence every ninth year. Vaddrek reports its holding as one gate and the surveyors record it as six, and both figures have gone into the register since 743 without either side asking a court to choose.
Sturmhalt 58 A Sturmhalt daughter married into Vaddrek in 801 with 200 barrels of oil, and the settlement exists in two versions, one sworn aloud and one cut in lead. They disagree about what happens to the oil if the marriage fails, and Vaddrek's clerks hold that the metal wins.
Farrowgate 59 Plough irons, mill gear and blades go from Vaddrek's ironworks to Farrowgate's tenants, about nine hundred crowns a year, billed to an account eleven years behind on payment. Vaddrek keeps delivering because those tenants are the only customers who will take dwarf ironwork without having it tested first.
Neutral trades, and no more than that 4
Meketri 37 Vaddrek's ironworks makes Meketri's well gear, chain and wagon tyres, and takes cattle in payment at its own valuation. Meketri has twice asked for the account in its own measures.
Meldrath 55 Nine hundred quarters a year come from Vaddrek's farms into Meldrath, which is what its lecture halls and drill field eat. Sorrenmark grows rye up against Meldrath's ditch and will not sell across the road fork, so the grain comes half a day downhill from a dwarf concession instead.
Quellborne 66 Quellborne's four law offices are fed on 900 hundredweight of Vaddrek's rye a year, paid for in cartage licences rather than coin. Vaddrek would rather have the money and takes the licences because the alternative is selling into Gundvarr's market.
Ythelas 77 Oats and winter rye come down from Vaddrek's farms to Ythelas, and Vaddrek takes half the price in the schooling of its clerks. Every load is weighed twice, once in each house's system, and both figures go in the book.

The full account — 9 houses, 10 arrangements
The concession earns twice over, once off grain and once off iron, and eleven names hold the gate both are billed under. Nine hundred quarters a year go down the gated road into the Aurel Wood, the Bellmark court hall and gaol are victualled off the same granges, and Quellborne's four agency yards take rye and pay in cartage licences rather than coin, which Vaddrek accepts because the alternative is Gundvarr's market. Plough irons off the iron furnace go to Farrowgate's tenants, the principal Corvantine buyers willing to take dwarf ironwork without a Bellmark test. Grain leaves on the Kazdrunn hundredweight, is billed at the survey rate, and the difference is written off yearly as cartage. The ninth-year return enters the stair as one gate while the surveyors enter six holdings, and neither side has asked the court to choose since 743 AF.

The four agency yards behind the transfer sheds are fed on Ironfurrow rye, 900 hundredweight a year down the oxen road, and Quellborne pays in cartage licences for the Emberrun barges instead of coin. Vaddrek would rather have the coin and takes the licences because the alternative is selling into Gundvarr's market.
-
Ironfurrow's granges send four hundred quarters of oats and barley up the Ferravant road each autumn, which is most of what the Sixth Gate eats that its mushroom cellars do not grow. Part of the price is that Emberkeel's clerks leave the Ironfurrow weighing yard out of what they tell Ferrovane's assessors.
-
Ironfurrow's iron furnace makes the well-gear, chain and wagon tyres for Meketri and takes cattle in payment at its own valuation. Meketri has asked twice for the account in Sekhemrite measure and been sent it in hundredweight both times.
-
Plough irons, mill gear and coulters go from the Ironfurrow iron furnace to the Hundred's tenants, about nine hundred crowns a year, billed to a receivership account eleven years in arrears. Vaddrek keeps delivering because the tenants are the only Corvantine customers who will take dwarf ironwork without a Ferrovane test.

Nine hundred quarters a year go from the Ironfurrow granges through the gated road into Meldrath, which is what the lecture halls and the drill field eat. Sorrenmark holds rye up against Meldrath's ditch and will not sell across the road fork, so the grain comes half a day downhill from a dwarf concession instead.
-
Ferrovane's court hall, its gaol and its readers are victualled off the Ironfurrow granges under a standing contract renewed with the concession. Ferrovane pays the survey rate and Vaddrek delivers on the Kazdrunn hundredweight, and the difference is written off each year as cartage.
The Ironfurrow Concession is confirmed at Ferrovane every ninth year for three hundred crowns and a survey of the granges. Vaddrek's return enters the stair as one gate and the surveyors enter it as six holdings, and both figures have gone into the register every ninth year since 743 AF without either side asking the court to choose.
-
Oats and winter rye off the Ironfurrow granges come down the oxen road and along the Solmarch to Ythelas, and Vaddrek takes half the price in the schooling of its gnome clerks. Every load is weighed twice, on the hold's hundredweight and on the survey's, and both figures go in the book because neither house will use the other's.
-
Sorrenmark's camp patrols the oxen road down from Ironfurrow and Vaddrek pays two hundred quarters of oats a season for it. A Kazdrunn hold buying Corvantine soldiers is remarked on at both ends of the road, and both houses would rather be remarked on than lose the iron furnace to the drifts off the badlands.
-
A Sturmhalt daughter went to Vaddrek in 801 with 200 barrels of oil and the recitation that goes with them, and the settlement exists twice, sworn aloud at the Hrimgard assembly and cut in lead at the Ironfurrow gate. The texts differ on what becomes of the oil if the marriage fails, and Vaddrek's clerks hold that the metal governs.
Assessors at Bellmark say the Blackfell gate count has not been independently checked since 743. Said in the Aurelmarch
