Sturmhalt
Sturmhalt holds a frontier, and its soldiers deal with raiders, migrations and unplated kingdoms that the Accords leave outside the treaty's protection. Sturmhalt maintains a second religious foundation.
Sturmhalt is Undivided, and its human shape is a working convenience rather than a claim of kinship. The people of Hookford are governed rather than represented, and the house says as much when it is asked. Its institutions are primal: thin borders and herding country, with the weakest adherence to the Accords. A wyrm in a trackless waste owes nobody much.
The holding
the Hrimgard Watch — the watch where the coast road stops
Shingle spit where the coast road ends, frozen peat behind, a cairn-chapel on the point.
The coast road ends on a shingle spit at Hookford and does not resume, so the western half of the Hrimgard March is reached by boat or not at all. The Watch holds a stockade, boat sheds and a cairn-chapel on the point, with frozen peat and thin reindeer grazing behind and a cairn-field on the seaward slope where the ground will still take a burial. The spit supports the Watch's buildings but no crop. Oats and carcasses come down from Slagbeck by the terrace road before the frost, boat frames come round the inlet from the Blackwillow yard, and Oarwick lies two days up the shore.
Connections
Garrison and chapel run off one payroll here, and both are formally read rather than filed.
Allies takes this house’s side 2
Kaldwyn 45 Kaldwyn has no wall and no road inland, so twelve of Sturmhalt's men and one boat sit at the oil works from the first ice to the thaw. The price was sworn in 761 against a fixed quantity of oil, and Kaldwyn has refused to reopen it at eleven assemblies running.
Vaddrek 81 A Sturmhalt daughter married into Vaddrek in 801 with 200 barrels of oil, and the settlement exists in two versions, one sworn aloud and one cut in lead. They disagree about what happens to the oil if the marriage fails, and Vaddrek's clerks hold that the metal wins.
Neutral trades, and no more than that 2
Duskenmoor 06 Duskenmoor's yard makes the chapel roof, the watch boats and every coffin board on the point, sixty rafts a season.
Tessarel 61 Tessarel carts four hundred reindeer carcasses and ninety quarters of oats down to Sturmhalt each autumn, before the frost closes the road. Sturmhalt pays a third in whale oil and the rest in escorting Tessarel's convoys.
Enemies has something open against it 2
Steinvald 19 Men who die out their sentences in the mines are walled into the rock behind Steinvald's workings at four marks a course, and Sturmhalt's chapel then reads their names out at three assemblies. Each house holds that its own rite is the one that buried them.
Cindralis 57 Sturmhalt's winter wages have been drawn on Cindralis since 788, and because Cindralis wants the debt in writing and Sturmhalt will only swear it aloud, Cindralis keeps a clerk whose entire job is standing in a room and listening. Cindralis also burns its dead an easy walk upwind of the cairn-field the Hrimgard Watch keeps on that shore, and on a westerly the smoke crosses it.

Garrison and chapel run off one payroll here, and both are formally read rather than filed. Twelve of the Watch's men and a boat sit at Oarwick's oil works from first ice to thaw on a rate sworn in 761 AF against a fixed quantity of train oil, which Kaldwyn has declined to reopen at eleven assemblies running. The winter wages are drawn on Shirogane-hama and have been since 788 AF; Cindralis wants the obligation written, Sturmhalt will only swear it, and the compound pays a Falkvald clerk to witness the exchange. Men who die out a twelve-year term in the Cinders are walled into Steinvald's working face at four marks a course, and the chapel then calls the names at three assemblies, neither house conceding which rite fulfilled the obligation.

A Sturmhalt daughter went to Vaddrek in 801 with 200 barrels of oil and the recitation that goes with them, and the settlement exists twice, sworn aloud at the Hrimgard assembly and cut in lead at the Ironfurrow gate. The texts differ on what becomes of the oil if the marriage fails, and Vaddrek's clerks hold that the metal governs.

Kaldwyn has no wall and no landward road, so twelve of the Watch's men and one boat sit at the oil works from first ice to thaw. The rate was sworn in 761 AF against a fixed quantity of train oil, and Kaldwyn has declined to reopen it at eleven assemblies running.

At every Hrimgard assembly the Watch's speaker moves that the plates be read aloud once a year at the Forge, and Steinvald's ironletters answer the motion in writing without having been asked. Sturmhalt's stake stands in the register as Breaks and Steinvald's as Holds, and both sides now quote the entry at each other rather than the argument.
Men sent to the Cinders on twelve-year terms who die there are walled into the rock behind Steinvald's working face at four marks a course, under a licence Steinvald grants the Watch by the year. Sturmhalt's chapel then calls the names at three assemblies, and neither house will concede which rite fulfilled the obligation.

Tessarel carts four hundred reindeer carcasses and ninety quarters of oats down to Sturmhalt's each autumn, before the frost shuts the terrace road. Sturmhalt settles a third in whale oil and the rest in escort along Malgareth's drove track, which Tessarel's clerks enter as payment and the Watch's clerks enter as a courtesy.
-
The cairn-chapel roof, the Watch's boat frames and every coffin-board on the point come out of Duskenmoor's yard, sixty rafts a season worked round the inlet mouth. Duskenmoor is asked each year to swear the delivery at the Hrimgard assembly and each year sends a written charter instead, which somebody else reads out and nobody answers.
-
Cindralis burns its dead in a walled ground an easy walk up the shore from the Watch's cairn-field, and on a westerly the smoke crosses the point. Sturmhalt's chapel has twice asked for the burning to be moved inland, and Cindralis has twice offered to pay for the asking to stop.
The Watch's winter payroll has been drawn on Cindralis since 788 AF, a hundred and sixty marks a quarter against the following season's oil. Cindralis requires the obligation in writing and Sturmhalt will only swear it, so the compound keeps a Falkvald clerk whose whole employment is standing in a room and listening.
The March has it that the payment comes from a house seeking an early reading of one plate. Said in the Hrimgard March
