Tessarel

Ashfall, the Hrimgard March · Warm iron · 13 living names

Tessarel works metal at scale — pig, bar and finished ironwork off the Ashfall furnaces, sold by weight against contracts that run for years. A second revenue comes off Tessarel's own fields.

Tessarel is Undivided. It wears human shape because a Wright at the Forge must wear something, and it treats an appeal to common blood as a category error. Its institutions are divine, and doctrine settles what interest would otherwise decide. The tradition signed last, and the reasons are still preached at Ashfall.

Slagbeck — the ash terraces above the barge landing

Ash-dusted terraces above the Sturmhalt Water landing, reindeer grazing behind, sulphur barges below.

Ash off the Sturmhalt Cinders dusts everything at Slagbeck, which stands on terraces above the landing where the Sturmhalt Water becomes barge water. The terraces carry roasting floors and forge hearths; the ground behind them is reindeer grazing, with oats on the two sheltered benches for as long as the frost allows. Sulphur comes down out of the Cinders and goes on north to the inlet, firebrick arrives over the Redgate road and across the inlet head, and the terrace road climbs from the landing towards the passes. Falkbeard's leased gate is a day up the water at the head of navigation.

The full account — 6 houses, 6 arrangements

Iron and grain sit in the same account here. Six hundred courses of Thrangar firebrick a year line the roasting floors, and four hundred reindeer carcasses and ninety quarters of oats go down to the Hrimgard Watch each autumn before the frost shuts the terrace road. Sturmhalt settles a third of that in whale oil and the rest in escort along the Coldmire drove track, which Tessarel's clerks enter as payment and the Watch's clerks as a courtesy. Grimhaldr has no living name left to renegotiate a price, so Slagbeck goes on paying the 794 AF rate and ordering rather more brick than the hearths need. Morlaneth's oats are paid for in ironwork at an agreed exchange, and Tessarel has been asking for coin instead since the exchange was set.

  • out 58 Sturmhalt grain

Tessarel carts four hundred reindeer carcasses and ninety quarters of oats down to Sturmhalt's each autumn, before the frost shuts the terrace road. Sturmhalt settles a third in whale oil and the rest in escort along Malgareth's drove track, which Tessarel's clerks enter as payment and the Watch's clerks enter as a courtesy.

  • out 26 Malgareth grain

Malgareth's palisade is fed on oats and reindeer meat carted half a day from Tessarel, weighed on its stone and paid for on a Vaskarni tally the yard cuts itself. The two measures have disagreed by about a fortieth for as long as the account has run, and neither house wants to be the one that had it settled.

  • out 36 Prospern litigation

Prospern's weirs sit across both channels at the head of the inlet, and the sulphur barges coming down the Sturmhalt Water are poled through a gap the weir-keepers open at their own hour. Tessarel has brought the matter to the assembly four times, and each hearing has ended in a ruling read aloud that the two houses record differently.

  • out 05 Ancarien grain

Ancarien's forge and its households eat Tessarel oats, forty quarters a year hauled over the tundra flank and paid for in ironwork at an agreed exchange. Tessarel would rather have coin, and Ancarien offers none.

  • Tessarel's forge hearths and roasting floors are lined with Grimhaldr firebrick, six hundred courses a year down the Redgate road and across the inlet head. Grimhaldr has no living name to renegotiate the price, so Tessarel has been paying the 794 AF rate and ordering rather more than it needs.

  • in 76 Nuirendil carriage

Every barrel of Tessarel sulphur bound south is transhipped at Nuirendil's wharves, on a hundredweight rate Nuirendil has revised twice in four years. Tessarel keeps the schedule of both revisions and reads it out at the assembly whenever the gulf tolls come up.

Barge crews say the Slagbeck brick order has run at twice the need for a decade, with no recorded destination for the surplus. Said in the Hrimgard March

The field colour is the house's tradition and the bound edge is the state of its plate, and neither is the house's to choose.
