Prospern
The house keeps files. That is the whole holding, and it is worth more than several provinces. An archive provides Prospern with a second line of work.
Prospern is Undivided. Its shape is an instrument, and its loyalty runs to the roughly two hundred beings in the world it considers truly relevant. A petitioner gets further with an offer than with an appeal to local kinship. Its institutions are arcane. Mage-cities and chartered guilds run on written procedure, and the tradition supplies most of the plate-readers the ring argues in front of.
The holding
Fellstrand — the weir-keepers who teach other people's clerks
Gravel bar at the head of the inlet, weirs on both channels, tundra track inland.
A gravel bar splits the water at the head of the northern inlet, and Fellstrand is built along it: weirs across both channels, a school hall, decked hurdles on piles, and a landing where the tundra track comes down off the Storvald Wolds. The bar grows nothing at all. Weir fish feed the place through the summer and its bread arrives ninety quarters at a time from Belcarrow's barley hollows. Sulphur barges out of Slagbeck are poled through a gap the weir-keepers open at their own hour, and the Blackwillow yard lies downstream on the far shore of the inlet.
Connections
Two names run Weirgate, and the weirs and school hall form a single business.
Allies takes this house’s side 2
Erevanth 49 Prospern sells Erevanth the lists of who has stopped paying on the northern work contracts, which is how a creditor four cells away hears about a default before the assembly does. Those lists are most of what Prospern sells.
Belcarrow 78 Prospern stands on gravel and grows nothing, so ninety quarters of barley and a wagon of mutton come down from Belcarrow every three months. Prospern trained four of Belcarrow's clerks and both its tally-men and writes its assembly returns, and half the grain price is set against that.
Neutral trades, and no more than that 2
Duskenmoor 06 Duskenmoor's yard cuts and drives the stakes and decking for Prospern's fish weirs, two hundred stakes a year, knowing those weirs are what Tessarel is suing about.
Nuirendil 76 Nuirendil sends its toll clerks north for a winter each, because northern wharf schedules are announced aloud and a house cannot afterwards claim it never heard what was said in a room it had a man in. Nuirendil pays forty marks a head, on time, every winter.
Enemies has something open against it 3
Faenlorn 01 Faenlorn lent Prospern 220 marks in 779, then let three assemblies pass without claiming it aloud, which in the north kills a debt. It still bills the interest and files the claim at the Forge every year.
Kaldwyn 45 Both have filed claims at the Forge to Falkbeard's informant records, each arguing that a spy's ledger with no living owner belongs to whoever holds the room it sits in. Prospern has two living members and cannot separate itself from what it does; Kaldwyn files through an agency and names nobody at all.
Tessarel 61 Prospern's fish weirs block both channels at the head of the inlet, and Tessarel's barges are poled through a gap the keepers open when they choose. Tessarel has taken it to the assembly four times, and each hearing ended in a spoken ruling the two houses wrote down differently.
The full account — 7 houses, 8 arrangements
Two names run Weirgate, and the weirs and school hall form a single business. Four of the Wolds' watch-road clerks and both tally-men were taught here at eleven marks a head against the barley account, and Prospern drafts Belcarrow's assembly returns under the same arrangement. Toll clerks come north from Nine Moorings for a winter each, because Nuirendil's records office must account for a schedule read aloud in a room where it kept a man. Arrears lists from the Sturmhalt convict-store contracts go south to Thornwater at a price the small house can charge. Tessarel has brought the poling gap to the assembly four times, and each ruling is recorded differently by each house.

Prospern sells Erevanth the arrears lists of the Sturmhalt convict-store contracts, which is how an elven creditor four cells south learns that a northern debtor has stopped paying before the assembly does. Prospern has two names in it and prices the service accordingly.
-
Four of the Wolds' watch-road clerks and both its tally-men were taught at Prospern, at eleven marks a head a year set against the barley account. Prospern also drafts Belcarrow's returns for the assembly, which is why the Wolds figures are the only ones the assembly does not argue about.
Prospern stands on a gravel bar and grows nothing, so its bread comes down the tundra track from the Wolds, ninety quarters of barley and a wagon of mutton every quarter-year. Belcarrow takes half the price in schooling and half in coin, and reviews the rate whenever the weirs have had a good run.
-
Nuirendil sends its toll clerks north to Prospern for a winter each, because a Falkvald wharf schedule is read aloud and an elven records office cannot plead ignorance of what was said in a room it kept a man in. Nuirendil pays forty marks a head, on time every winter.
-
Both houses have lodged competing claims at the Forge to Falkbeard's informant ledgers, each arguing that a Cipherhouse book with no living name behind it falls to whoever holds the room it sits in. Prospern carries two names and cannot put any distance between the house and the act; Kaldwyn's pleadings are filed through an agency and name nobody at all.
-
Prospern's weirs sit across both channels at the head of the inlet, and the sulphur barges coming down the Sturmhalt Water are poled through a gap the weir-keepers open at their own hour. Tessarel has brought the matter to the assembly four times, and each hearing has ended in a ruling read aloud that the two houses record differently.
-
Weir stakes, hurdles and the platform decking at Prospern are cut and driven by Duskenmoor's yard, two hundred stakes a year on a standing order. Duskenmoor knows the same weirs are what Tessarel is suing about and has raised its price for the difficulty rather than pick a side.
-
An advance of two hundred and twenty marks made to Prospern in 779 AF has gone three assemblies without being formally read, which every bench on the March treats as abandonment. Faenlorn's committee treats it as outstanding and has begun entering the interest at the Forge instead, where nothing has to be said aloud.
The Forge records office says Fellstrand's pleadings come from an outside hand, though neither of the two names has claimed the drafting fee. Said in the Hrimgard March
