Faenlorn
Faenlorn lends. Mints and loan portfolios out of Loamhollow, and a book of sovereign debt that includes, quietly, paper signed by dragons. Faenlorn also holds temples.
Faenlorn declines the usual categories. Its elves are *contemporaries* who remember the same centuries, and Loamhollow remains one of the few realms where a Wright genuinely negotiates. Its institutions are occult, ruling through cults, debts and information rather than office. This is the tradition that has benefited most from the arrangement. An arcane establishment works alongside the occult institutions. Their jurisdictions overlap at Loamhollow's gate, river court or marriage table, and neither will yield its place.
The holding
the Sirendel Reach — the vault in the birch hollow
Birch hollow with loam a spade deep, one gated track in, and a stone vault where Falkvald crews lodge the season's silver.
Loam a spade deep fills the birch hollow above the outer lip of the Storvald Gulf, which is more than any other ground in this cell can claim, and the Sirendel Reach has held it under charters older than the assembly that now names the coast. Birch, a shrine, a pilgrim way and a stone vault are its main income, entered by one gated track over the head of the hollow. Pilgrims land at the rock wharves at Nine Moorings and come up the coast by boat. Belcarrow's sheep walks start just beyond the gate and Shirogane-hama's landing lies two days east.
Connections
Money leaves the vault each spring on a committee minute, eight hundred marks against the Wolds' wool and two hundred against the barley, and comes back over an eleven-week pilgrim season that eats a hundred and forty quarters of barley and three hundred sheep, bought from that same house at a price set once the pilgrim numbers are known.
Allies takes this house’s side 1
Neutral trades, and no more than that 3
Aldemarch 53 Aldemarch keeps grain receipts in Faenlorn's vault as security for a road contract. The two houses count them by different systems twice a year, and the gap has run at about one part in forty since the account opened.
Grivane 60 Faenlorn sends Grivane four thousand sacks of charcoal a season and takes a share of Grivane's furnace income as security. That is most of the fuel Grivane's furnaces run on.
Nuirendil 76 Nuirendil's boats bring Faenlorn's pilgrims up the coast at four marks a head. Faenlorn pays for the whole season before it starts, so a thin year costs Faenlorn and not the boatmen.
Enemies has something open against it 5
Anvilbrand 23 Anvilbrand borrowed three thousand marks from Faenlorn and its family died out before repaying. Karagunn works that ground now and answers every year that it inherited the rock and not the debt.
Malgareth 26 Faenlorn has been quietly buying Malgareth's debts from anyone who will sell, at a third of what they are worth, and now claims Malgareth's cattle road as security. It holds more of Malgareth's debt than any other house.
Prospern 36 Faenlorn lent Prospern 220 marks in 779, then let three assemblies pass without claiming it aloud, which in the north kills a debt. It still bills the interest and files the claim at the Forge every year.
Cindralis 57 Ship crews who used to store their season's silver at Faenlorn now store it at Cindralis, which charges less. Faenlorn says an old charter gives it that business; Cindralis says a charter is not a price.
Belcarrow 78 Belcarrow grows the food Faenlorn's eleven-week pilgrim season runs on, escorts the pilgrims in, and sets both prices once it knows how many are coming. It has also widened its road across Faenlorn's best farmland twice, and Faenlorn has complained in writing every year for thirty years without once asking for the road to be closed.

Falkvald crews who lodged their silver here now lodge some of it behind Cindralis's gate, at a lower fee and against a receipt a coast court will honour, which Faenlorn pleads as interference with a charter older than the compound. Coldmire paper is bought at a third of face and filed as it goes. Belcarrow's road has taken a few more yards of loam at each widening, entered at the Forge for thirty years and objected to only on paper.

The vault at Faenlorn holds 60,000 silver of Aldemarch granary receipts, lodged as security for the garrison-road contract of 794. Faenlorn's clerks post the assessment twice a year, once by Corvantine survey and once by elven reckoning, and Aldemarch pays the difference rather than argue it.
-
Birch billets and charcoal ship down the gulf from Faenlorn to Grivane, four thousand sacks a season, against a lien on the slag revenue that Faenlorn renews each year. The lien is drawn in an elven form and no Falkvald assembly has been asked to read it.
-
Faenlorn's vault has been buying Malgareth paper at something near a third of face from anyone willing to sell it, and files each purchase at the Forge as it goes. Faenlorn's committee has also entered a claim to Malgareth's drove track as security, which Malgareth's factors dispute and Sturmhalt's Watch would sooner not see decided either way.
-
An advance of two hundred and twenty marks made to Prospern in 779 AF has gone three assemblies without being formally read, which every bench on the March treats as abandonment. Faenlorn's committee treats it as outstanding and has begun entering the interest at the Forge instead, where nothing has to be said aloud.
-
That same road was cut across the head of the birch hollow in 771 AF and has been widened twice since, each widening taking a few more yards of the only spade-deep loam in the cell. Faenlorn has entered the encroachment at the Forge every year for thirty years and asks only that the encroachment be recorded, not that the road be closed.
Eight hundred marks on the wool and two hundred on the barley in the hollows go out from Faenlorn's committee every spring against the Wolds' clip. Two bad barley years would leave a good part of the Reach's lending resting on a house whose stake is entered as Breaks, and the committee has minuted that rather than acted on it.
Forty pilgrim parties a season are escorted the last stretch to Faenlorn's gate by men off the Wolds' watch road, at two marks a head. Belcarrow charges the same for parties that asked for no escort, on the reasoning that the road was walked either way.
Pilgrim season at Faenlorn runs eleven weeks and takes a hundred and forty quarters of barley and three hundred sheep, all of it off the Wolds and all of it carted in through the one gated track. Belcarrow sets the price once the pilgrim numbers are known, which Faenlorn has complained about in writing and continues to pay.
-
A Anvilbrand bond of 84 AF, three thousand marks at four in the hundred, still stands at face in Faenlorn's vault, because striking it would oblige the committee to rule on whether a cracked house can be a debtor. Faenlorn files the claim afresh each year, and Karagunn, which works that ground now, files an answer saying it holds nothing but the rock.
-
Ordwaine takes six of Faenlorn's counting-clerks a year for a two-year course in double reckoning, paid out of a standing deposit at Faenlorn that Ordwaine keeps above the fee. The archive also keeps the fair copy of the lodgement register, so a dispute over a season's Falkvald silver at Faenlorn is settled from a book four cells south.
-
Falkvald crews who used to lodge the season's silver in Faenlorn's vault have begun lodging it behind Cindralis's gate instead, at a lower fee and against a receipt a coast court will honour. Faenlorn has taken the matter up as interference with a charter older than the compound, and Cindralis has answered that a charter is not a rate.
-
Pilgrims for Faenlorn land at Nuirendil's rock wharves and are carried up the coast in its boats, four marks a head including the return. Faenlorn subscribes for the whole season in advance, so a thin year falls on the Reach and not on the ferryman.
The gulf has it that the Reach's committee lends well south of its charters, and that its minutes are copied to an address nobody at the assembly can name. Said in the Storvald Gulf
