Kaldwyn
Knowing first is the trade. Kaldwyn's correspondents write from inside other houses' offices, and a season's reports are priced case by case. Its own agency charters bring in additional work.
Asked *whose are you?*, Kaldwyn answers that the line runs between dragon and mortal. It wears human shape and recognises the other wyrms as its peers; the people around it are subjects, clients or weather. The distinction makes Kaldwyn easy to bargain with and hard to shame. Its institutions are occult. Authority runs through cults, creditors and people who know things, and the offices at Greyholt are held by whoever the house finds it convenient to seat.
The holding
Oarwick — the oil works that keeps everyone's sailing lists
A whaling station on the north strand, oil works and oil sheds behind it, reached only by boat.
Oarwick works eight months and stands empty for the rest, which on this stretch of the Hrimgard March is ordinary. It sits on the north strand with oil works, oil sheds and a cooperage set behind the shingle bank, and no landward road whatever, since the coast road stops at the Saltings and everything west of that moves by boat. The station grows nothing; barley and salt mutton come off the Storvald Wolds in three lifts a season and are landed on the beach. The Hrimgard Watch is two days' pull down the shore, and the Coldmire palisade five days inland by the drove track.
Connections
Oil and baleen pay the wages, and the season is short enough that both hulls lifting the casks out before the ice are chartered through Cindralis's harbour clerk, a rate Kaldwyn finds fair and objects every year to sealing after.
Allies takes this house’s side 2
Ferrovane 50 Kaldwyn sells Ferrovane's toll office the sailing lists of every ship leaving the gulf without the proper stamp, at four silver a name. Ferrovane issues cartage licences off those lists three cells inland.
Sturmhalt 58 Kaldwyn has no wall and no road inland, so twelve of Sturmhalt's men and one boat sit at the oil works from the first ice to the thaw. The price was sworn in 761 against a fixed quantity of oil, and Kaldwyn has refused to reopen it at eleven assemblies running.
Neutral trades, and no more than that 3
Cindralis 57 The two ships that carry Kaldwyn's oil out before the ice are chartered through Cindralis, the freight set against the same season's advance. Those two sailings are the whole of Kaldwyn's export.
Nuirendil 76 Kaldwyn sells Nuirendil a list of every ship that takes a gulf pilot, paid for by the season, and it reaches the wharves four days ahead of the cargo.
Belcarrow 78 Kaldwyn's eight working months run on two hundred quarters of Belcarrow's barley and forty of salt mutton, landed by boat because the coast road stops short. Belcarrow ships it in three loads and charges the whole season's freight against the first.
Enemies has something open against it 2
Prospern 36 Both have filed claims at the Forge to Falkbeard's informant records, each arguing that a spy's ledger with no living owner belongs to whoever holds the room it sits in. Prospern has two living members and cannot separate itself from what it does; Kaldwyn files through an agency and names nobody at all.
Emberkeel 42 Kaldwyn's agency has run the complaint over two drained springs for nine years and files it under its own name rather than its client's. Emberkeel's clerks answer every filing and note in the margin that three mountain villages could not possibly fund a ninth year of this.

Oil and baleen pay the wages, and the season is short enough that both hulls lifting the casks out before the ice are chartered through Cindralis's harbour clerk, a rate Kaldwyn finds fair and objects every year to sealing after. The rest of the year's income is clerical. Every hull that takes a gulf pilot is written on a list Oarwick sells to Nuirendil, and the same lists go south at four silver a name to Ferrovane's toll office, where cartage licences are assessed off them in a court hall three cells inland. Twelve of the Watch's men winter at the oil works on a rate sworn in 761 AF that Kaldwyn will not reopen. A Forge complaint over two drained Drusenmark springs has run nine years through the agency, with the principal omitted from the filings.

Kaldwyn supplies Ferrovane's toll office with the sailing lists of every hull leaving the Storvald Gulf without a stamp from the Anvilwater transfer, at four silver a name. Ferrovane assesses cartage licences off those lists in a court hall three cells inland and where they come from has not come up in open session.
-
Every hull that takes a gulf pilot is named on a list Kaldwyn sells to Nuirendil, and the list reaches the wharves four days ahead of the cargo. Nuirendil pays by the season and has twice tried to establish who else subscribes.

The Forge complaint over the two drained Drusenmark springs has been carried by Kaldwyn's agency for nine years, and the agency files under its own name, not the principal's. Emberkeel's clerks answer each pleading and note in the margin that three mountain villages could not fund a ninth year of this.

Both houses have lodged competing claims at the Forge to Falkbeard's informant ledgers, each arguing that a Cipherhouse book with no living name behind it falls to whoever holds the room it sits in. Prospern carries two names and cannot put any distance between the house and the act; Kaldwyn's pleadings are filed through an agency and name nobody at all.

Kaldwyn has no wall and no landward road, so twelve of the Watch's men and one boat sit at the oil works from first ice to thaw. The rate was sworn in 761 AF against a fixed quantity of train oil, and Kaldwyn has declined to reopen it at eleven assemblies running.
-
The two hulls that lift Kaldwyn's oil out before the ice are chartered through Cindralis, the freight booked against the same season's advance and settled at the gulf wharves. Kaldwyn finds the rate fair and objects every year to sealing after Cindralis's harbour clerk.
Clerks at Bellmark say the Oarwick lists contain more detail than the ten names could gather, and suspect a second subscriber. Said in the Hrimgard March

A grey wolf's head in profile with a wax-sealed writ clenched in its jaws, a keyhole where its eye should be.
Sable, an eye Argent; in base a writ sealed Argent; a bordure of warm iron. (Plate 45; ten living names.)
The field colour is the house's tradition and the bound edge is the state of its plate, and neither is the house's to choose.
