Ferrovane
The academies are the asset. Ferrovane has former students in rival chanceries, where they carry habits learned at home. A crossing under its charter gives Ferrovane another income.
Ferrovane is Undivided. It wears human shape because a Wright at the Forge must wear something, and it treats an appeal to common blood as a category error. Its institutions are occult, ruling through cults, debts and information rather than office. This is the tradition that has benefited most from the arrangement. The house also carries An arcane establishment, of long standing and no goodwill toward the occult side. Both are indispensable, so neither has been suppressed.
The holding
the Solmarch Head — the appeal court above the barge head
Gravel terrace at the Solmarch barge head, paved road and toll house, court hall above
Bellmark stands on a gravel terrace where the Solmarch stops taking barges and everything going north out of the Aurelmarch goes onto wheels. The wharves and sheds are below, the paved road and the toll house run along their front, and the court hall sits on the terrace above with the rate books, the gaol and the readers' lodgings behind it. Brakkenstone's smelter water channels are upriver in the Thurmgar foothills, and the water has fallen to a walking depth in August four years out of nine. Ferravant grain country lies west across the plain, Vaddrek's oxen road comes in from the north-east, and the Coltfold's rye is four days downriver.
Connections
Two things on the terrace pay for Bellmark, the toll and the court.
Allies takes this house’s side 4
Kurohane 20 Ferrovane trains Kurohane's clerks for a year each so Kurohane's road rights can be argued in Corvantine form when they are challenged. Kurohane pays 600 silver a clerk and first refusal on mast timber, and Ferrovane takes no clerk from the house on the other side of the same dispute.
Kaldwyn 45 Kaldwyn sells Ferrovane's toll office the sailing lists of every ship leaving the gulf without the proper stamp, at four silver a name. Ferrovane issues cartage licences off those lists three cells inland.
Aldemarch 53 Aldemarch's tax assessors spend two years at Ferrovane before they are let near a rate book, twenty-eight of them since 800. Ferrovane also runs the appeal court that hears complaints about those assessments.
Vaddrek 81 Ferrovane's court, gaol and staff are fed off Vaddrek's farms under a contract renewed with Vaddrek's mining licence every ninth year. Vaddrek reports its holding as one gate and the surveyors record it as six, and both figures have gone into the register since 743 without either side asking a court to choose.
Neutral trades, and no more than that 1
Enemies has something open against it 4
Brakkenstone 08 Every ton of Brakkenstone's silver and lead pays Ferrovane's toll on the way down the river, about nine hundred tons a season. Ferrovane is also suing because Brakkenstone's smelters take so much water that the river is too shallow to use each August, four years out of nine.
Meldrath 55 Ferrovane struck Meldrath off its list of recognised schools the year the house died out, and no Meldrath certificate has been accepted for a court post since. Meldrath halved its fees and started taking students Ferrovane had failed, and there are now two grades of clerk on that road who will not sit in the same room.
Farrowgate 59 Ferrovane has administered Farrowgate's affairs since 118 and holds its court roll, its market charter and its mint keys. Its position is that the arrangement lasts until the record is corrected, and the record has not been touched since Farrowgate was destroyed.
Skarveth 65 Ferrovane's assessors seized twelve of Skarveth's oxen in 810, because the ford toll Skarveth charges appears in no published rate table. Skarveth says the ford was tolled by assembly decision four generations before the survey ever reached it, and the court has asked to see that decision in writing.
The full account — 9 houses, 11 arrangements
Two things on the terrace pay for Bellmark, the toll and the court. Every one of Brakkenstone's nine hundred tons of silver and lead pigs pays on the way down, and the Cindershelf has costed the drove road round to the west three times and pays the toll anyway. Aldemarch sends its assessors here for two years at sixty crowns a head, and the appeal court that hears their assessments afterwards is this bench. Vaddrek's Ironfurrow concession is confirmed here every ninth year, and the gaol and the readers are victualled off the Ironfurrow granges in return. The Ferravant Hundred has been in Bellmark receivership since 118 AF, with its court roll, market charter and mint keys held in the hall, and Ferrovane's position is that the receivership runs until the plate is amended.
-
Ferrovane has sued Brakkenstone over the smelter water channels, which take enough of the Thurmgar headwater that the Solmarch barge head has gone unnavigable in August four years out of nine. Ferrovane wants the draw capped by survey measure and Brakkenstone answers that a gate takes what a gate needs.
Silver and lead pigs come down the Solmarch to the barge head, about nine hundred tons a season, and every one of them pays Ferrovane's toll on the way out. Brakkenstone has costed the drove road round to the west three times and the saving has come out short of the extra nine days each time.
-
Ferrovane's assessors distrained twelve of Skarveth's oxen in 810 AF on the ground that the Ferravant ford toll appears in no rate table anyone can buy for two coppers. Skarveth's answer is that the ford was tolled by assembly decision four generations before the survey reached it, and the court has asked for that minute in writing.
-
Ferrovane has administered Farrowgate under receivership since 118 AF and holds its court roll, its market charter and the mint keys. Ferrovane's position is that the receivership runs until the plate is amended, and the plate has not been amended since the sky came down on it.
-
The Ironfurrow Concession is confirmed at Ferrovane every ninth year for three hundred crowns and a survey of the granges. Vaddrek's return enters the stair as one gate and the surveyors enter it as six holdings, and both figures have gone into the register every ninth year since 743 AF without either side asking the court to choose.
Ferrovane's court hall, its gaol and its readers are victualled off the Ironfurrow granges under a standing contract renewed with the concession. Ferrovane pays the survey rate and Vaddrek delivers on the Kazdrunn hundredweight, and the difference is written off each year as cartage.
-
Aldemarch's assessors read two years at Ferrovane before they are let near a rate book, sixty crowns a head, twenty-eight of them since 800 AF. Ferrovane also keeps the appeal court that hears Aldemarch's assessments, which Aldemarch's clerks call convenient and Ferrovane's readers call ordinary.
-
Ferrovane struck Meldrath off its list of recognised halls the year the Meldrath plate went cold, and no Meldrath certificate has been accepted for a court clerkship since. Meldrath halved its fees and began taking men Ferrovane had failed, and there are now two grades of clerk on the Solmarch road who will not sit in the same room.
-
Ferrovane's court hall takes Kurohane's concession clerks for a year each, so that the ridge-track concession can be pleaded in Corvantine form when the Reach records office disputes it. Kurohane pays 600 silver a clerk and a first refusal on mast timber, and Ferrovane takes no clerk from the house on the other side of the same concession.
-
The Cistern Road carries the Reach dead down off the plain to the Solmarch barge head, thirty or forty a year in dry cases, and Ferrovane's toll house charges a third again on anything with a body in it. Pardahni pays the surcharge, records it as an insult, and the shortest stage that avoids the toll house adds nine days.
-
Kaldwyn supplies Ferrovane's toll office with the sailing lists of every hull leaving the Storvald Gulf without a stamp from the Anvilwater transfer, at four silver a name. Ferrovane assesses cartage licences off those lists in a court hall three cells inland and where they come from has not come up in open session.
Ambassadors say the receivership is not the oldest instrument in the Bellmark vault, and the readers answer that the roll is open to anyone who files. Said in the Aurelmarch
