Brakkenstone
Craft is the living — hulls, hinges, blades and rails. Every rival's war runs partly on Brakkenstone's output, which is a comfortable position and a conspicuous one. Its granaries give Brakkenstone a second source of revenue.
Ask Brakkenstone to choose between its people and the draconic order. Its answer follows the people, which leaves a gap in the assumption behind Clause I that every dragon will join the punishment. The Forge has planned around that gap for centuries. The tradition is divine. Its orders hold one moral extreme or the other, and both wings read the Accords as a compromise, disagreeing only about what with. A primal establishment stands beside the divine one. They share Cliffhold and dispute the order of precedence at every ceremony that has one.
The holding
the Cindershelf — the shelf that weighs at its own gate
Limestone cliff over the Thurmgar headwater, silver smelters on the plain below, charcoal roads in
Cliffhold stands on a limestone shelf where the Thurmgar comes out of the rock and becomes the Solmarch just downstream, with the silver and lead smelters out on the plains edge below because that is where the fuel can be got to. Charcoal roads come in from three directions and the water channels come off the headwater, which is the whole argument with the barge people at Bellmark. Barley and mushroom cellars carry the hold's own eating and a surplus that goes south over the pass to Kolgast in the eighty days it stands open. The Greyseam lies a fortnight east along the shoulder road.
Connections
Nine hundred tons of silver and lead pigs go down the Solmarch to the barge head each season, and every one of them pays Ferrovane's toll; the drove road round to the west has been costed three times and always comes out nine days longer.
Allies takes this house’s side 4
Thalassil 07 An heir of one married into the other in 796, and each house entered the children on its own family roll. No court will say which roll counts, so eight years of grazing rent is sitting untouched while they wait.
Sorrenmark 14 Sorrenmark's army camp buys forty tons of iron a year from Brakkenstone at the army rate, which is below market. Brakkenstone treats the loss as the price of never having soldiers billeted on its charcoal roads.
Steinvald 19 Two hundred quarters of barley and forty hundredweight of dried mushrooms cross the pass to Steinvald each summer, priced on the pass staying open eighty days. Brakkenstone takes half the payment in legal opinions and uses them in its own boundary disputes.
Karagunn 34 Karagunn married a Brakkenstone daughter in 806 and got the charcoal road above its gate as the settlement. Brakkenstone's priests will not share a burial ground with Karagunn's, so both copies of the contract say the children are buried at Brakkenstone.
Neutral trades, and no more than that 4
Grimhaldr 13 Grimhaldr's kilns make the eleven thousand firebricks a year that line Brakkenstone's smelters, as they did before Grimhaldr's last family member died. Brakkenstone now pays into an account rather than to a person, and has asked the Forge in writing whether that counts as paying.
Sekhemra 25 Sekhemra's furnaces make more charcoal in winter than they burn and send four thousand sacks north. The two houses measure it differently and have split the difference at every renewal since 780.
Emberkeel 42 Emberkeel cuts limestone out of its own tunnel roof and sends three hundred hundredweight a season to Brakkenstone, whose silver will not smelt without it. Brakkenstone now takes delivery and weighs at its own gate.
Cuiveril 43 A dozen of Brakkenstone's clerks are always at Cuiveril, on a three-year course in record-keeping and water accounting at ninety silver a head a year. Brakkenstone pays in refined silver and takes a copy of the teaching tables as part of the fee.
Enemies has something open against it 4
Thurmgrim 29 Twelve hundred tons of Thurmgrim coal a year still cross the ridge to Brakkenstone's smelters on a contract cut in metal in 688. Since Thurmgrim's family died out, Brakkenstone has weighed the coal on its own scales, paid three months late, and filed a claim that the coal seam runs under Brakkenstone and has been worked from the wrong side for sixty years.
Ferrovane 50 Every ton of Brakkenstone's silver and lead pays Ferrovane's toll on the way down the river, about nine hundred tons a season. Ferrovane is also suing because Brakkenstone's smelters take so much water that the river is too shallow to use each August, four years out of nine.
Farrowgate 59 Brakkenstone supplied Farrowgate's mint with silver for ninety years, and the coin dies were still in the vault when Farrowgate was destroyed. Brakkenstone claims them against a last delivery it was never paid for, in a case adjourned since 214.
Quellborne 66 One of Quellborne's law offices has joined the water case against Brakkenstone on behalf of shippers it refuses to name, listing the barges delayed and the cargo lost but no owner for either.
The full account — 12 houses, 14 arrangements
Nine hundred tons of silver and lead pigs go down the Solmarch to the barge head each season, and every one of them pays Ferrovane's toll; the drove road round to the west has been costed three times and always comes out nine days longer. Nothing runs without flux and fuel, so dolomite comes over from Emberkeel, twelve hundred tons of coal a year off the Greyseam on a contract cut in metal in 688 AF, and four thousand sacks of Sunjara charcoal from Sekhemra on a conversion neither house will write down. Since Coalgate went cold the smelters weigh at their own gate and pay at ninety days. Cliffhold's claim that the Greyseam's lower seam has been worked from the wrong side went in the season after that, and its pleadings make nothing of the date.
-
Brakkenstone has entered a claim at the Forge that Thurmgrim's lower coal seam runs under Brakkenstone's gate and has been worked from the wrong side for sixty years. The filing went in the season after Thurmgrim's plate went cold, and Brakkenstone's pleadings make nothing of the date.
Thurmgrim coal goes over the shoulder to Brakkenstone's smelters, twelve hundred tons a year, on a contract cut in metal in 688 AF between two houses that both still hang on the ring. Since Thurmgrim went cold, Brakkenstone weighs at its own gate and pays at ninety days, and nobody at Thurmgrim has been able to say who would object.
-
Silver and lead pigs come down the Solmarch to the barge head, about nine hundred tons a season, and every one of them pays Ferrovane's toll on the way out. Brakkenstone has costed the drove road round to the west three times and the saving has come out short of the extra nine days each time.
Ferrovane has sued Brakkenstone over the smelter water channels, which take enough of the Thurmgar headwater that the Solmarch barge head has gone unnavigable in August four years out of nine. Ferrovane wants the draw capped by survey measure and Brakkenstone answers that a gate takes what a gate needs.
-
Brakkenstone supplied Farrowgate's mint with silver for the first ninety years after the signing, and when the Farrowgate plate cracked the dies stayed in the mint vault. Brakkenstone claims them against the unpaid last delivery in the only Corvantine action it has ever brought, adjourned since 214 AF.
-
Karagunn took a Brakkenstone daughter in 806 AF with the charcoal road above Karagunn settled on the match. Brakkenstone's temple side will not bury with Karagunn, so the settlement provides in both halves of the cut plate that the children are laid at Brakkenstone.
-
Sorrenmark's camp takes forty tons of bar iron and eight hundredweight of shoe stock a year off Brakkenstone, delivered to the road fork and billed at the legion rate, which is under the market. Brakkenstone treats the difference as the price of nobody quartering on its charcoal roads.
-
Two hundred quarters of barley and forty hundredweight of dried mushroom come over the southern pass to Steinvald each summer, priced against the pass standing open eighty days. Brakkenstone takes half the payment in treaty opinions, which it uses in its own gate-count disputes and considers the better half of the bargain.
-
The Sixth Gate cuts dolomite out of its own roof and sends three hundred hundredweight a season along the shoulder road to Brakkenstone, whose silver will not run without flux. Brakkenstone now takes delivery at its own gate and weighs there, a change it dates to the season the Emberkeel plate began to open.
-
The Sunjara iron furnaces burn less charcoal in winter than they make and send four thousand sacks up to Brakkenstone, measured in Sekhemrite loads and paid on the Kazdrunn hundredweight. The conversion has been disputed at every renewal since 780 AF and settled each time by splitting the difference and writing neither figure down.
-
Grimhaldr's kilns supply the firebrick that lines Brakkenstone's smelters, eleven thousand a year, and did so before the Grimhaldr plate went cold. Brakkenstone now pays into a hold account rather than to a person and has asked the Forge in writing whether that discharges the debt.
-
The second of Quellborne's chartered yards has entered an appearance against Brakkenstone in the headwater suit on behalf of shippers it declines to name. Quellborne's filing gives the barges delayed and the tonnage lost, and no owner for either.
-
An Thalassil heir married into a Brakkenstone branch in 796, and both houses being Kinsworn, the azarketi line and the dwarf clan each entered the children on their own roll. Neither the Forge nor the harbour court in the Sixtongue Roads will say which roll governs, and the reed-grazing rents have gone into escrow for eight years.
-
A dozen of Brakkenstone's test clerks are at Cuiveril at any time, on a three-year course in records office form and Sekhemrite water accounting at ninety silver a head a year. Brakkenstone pays in refined silver by weight and takes a copy of the test tables as part of the fee, which is the only part of the arrangement its clan assembly has ever approved.
Barge masters at the Solmarch head price Cindershelf silver as though rather more of it left the shelf than ever crossed Bellmark's weighbridge. Said in the Thurmgar Deeps

Arms
A bracken fern uncurling out of a split block of granite, an ear of barley bound to the stone with a leather thong, a mountain ridge behind.
Or, party per pale by a line Gules, a hammer and a mount Gules; in base a garb Gules; a chief Vert; a bordure of warm iron. (Plate 8; seventeen living names.)
The field colour is the house's tradition and the bound edge is the state of its plate, and neither is the house's to choose.
