Grimhaldr
Smoke over Pitchwater most days of the year. Grimhaldr sells the material of everybody else's ambitions. A second border answers to Grimhaldr.
Grimhaldr is Kinsworn, and means it. Its Wright wears dwarf shape as a member of that people: the oldest and largest member of the family, with its gods, inheritance law and opinion of the neighbours. Its position can be negotiated, but its loyalties can be shamed. The tradition is arcane, which at Pitchwater means a college, an archive and a filing habit. It wrote the case law the Accords are now read through.
The holding
Thrangar — the kiln bank that still invoices
Firebrick kilns on volcanic waste, a sulphur tarn below, the Redgate cart road above.
Six kiln banks stand on volcanic waste at the western gate of the Anvil Stair, above a tarn the drovers have fenced, and below the Redgate cart road. Loaded carts bound north for Falkvald ground use Redgate, so everything fired here passes a toll raised eleven times since the signing. Clay is dug on the waste, coal comes nine hundred tons a year down the shoulder road off the Greyseam, and the food is carted up from the Storvald Wolds, because volcanic ground grows nothing. Pack trains form up on the plains shelf east of the kilns.
Connections
Since 799 AF the kilns have used a price that no Thrangar office has altered.
Allies takes this house’s side 0
No house on the ring takes this one’s side.
Neutral trades, and no more than that 6
Brakkenstone 08 Grimhaldr's kilns make the eleven thousand firebricks a year that line Brakkenstone's smelters, as they did before Grimhaldr's last family member died. Brakkenstone now pays into an account rather than to a person, and has asked the Forge in writing whether that counts as paying.
Falkbeard 12 A dozen men on Grimhaldr's payroll still guard Falkbeard's gate, under a deal made between two houses that now have no living members between them. The wages come out of a chest nobody has checked since 799.
Anvilbrand 23 Grimhaldr's firebrick lined Anvilbrand's kilns for a hundred and forty years, and four deliveries were never paid for. Grimhaldr ran out of living members before it could sue, and its creditors still carry the debt on their books.
Thurmgrim 29 Nine hundred tons of Thurmgrim coal a year still come down to Grimhaldr's kilns on a schedule set when both houses were alive. Neither has anyone left to change it, so the coal arrives on the old figure.
Tessarel 61 Six hundred courses of Grimhaldr firebrick a year line Tessarel's furnaces and roasting floors. There is nobody left at Grimhaldr to renegotiate, so Tessarel still pays the 794 price.
Belcarrow 78 Nothing grows on volcanic waste, so Grimhaldr's kilns are fed on sixty quarters of Belcarrow barley and salt mutton every three months. Belcarrow has put the price up twice since the house died out.
Enemies has something open against it 4
Vaskaryn 21 Vaskaryn has bought nine shares in the Redgate toll out of the estates of Grimhaldr men who died without heirs. Four neighbouring holds say a toll share on a road to the Forge cannot pass to a house that holds no gate, and the Forge has noted the point twice without ruling on it.
Yatagaru 33 Yatagaru is owed 40,000 silver by Grimhaldr, secured on kiln output nobody has weighed since the last family member died. Its agents have twice asked the Forge who can sign the debt off for a house the treaty no longer protects, and been told twice to ask the clan.
Karagunn 34 Karagunn buys about a third of Grimhaldr's firebrick and has started demanding two years' supply in advance. With nobody left at Grimhaldr to object, it has also claimed the kiln road and the sulphur pool against an unpaid builders' bill, and two other holds have claimed the same ground.
Vurrgast 80 Grimhaldr's firebrick contracts ended with its last living member, and Vurrgast has taken over four of the five on a filing saying Grimhaldr cannot perform them. The fifth belongs to the hold that owes Grimhaldr the most money, and Vurrgast has left that one alone.
The full account — 10 houses, 11 arrangements
Since 799 AF the kilns have used a price that no Thrangar office has altered. Six hundred courses of firebrick a year go down the Redgate road to Tessarel's hearths at Slagbeck on the 794 rate, and Tessarel now orders rather more than it needs; Karagunn takes about a third of the output for the Sleetgate smithy row and has begun asking for two years in advance. Belcarrow has raised the barley price twice and been paid twice without a word. The Greyseam coal arrives on a schedule cut in metal by two houses with no name left between them, and the clerks at both ends keep filing. Nothing here is covered by Clause I any more, and two of Sleetgate's watch-posts now stand on the kiln ground above the tarn.
-
Grimhaldr's kilns supply the firebrick that lines Brakkenstone's smelters, eleven thousand a year, and did so before the Grimhaldr plate went cold. Brakkenstone now pays into a hold account rather than to a person and has asked the Forge in writing whether that discharges the debt.
-
Grimhaldr firebrick lined Anvilbrand's kilns for a hundred and forty years and four deliveries are still owed for. Grimhaldr's names ran out before it could sue, and its creditors now cite the unpaid entry as an asset.
-
Tessarel's forge hearths and roasting floors are lined with Grimhaldr firebrick, six hundred courses a year down the Redgate road and across the inlet head. Grimhaldr has no living name to renegotiate the price, so Tessarel has been paying the 794 AF rate and ordering rather more than it needs.
-
A dozen men on Grimhaldr's Redgate payroll stand Falkbeard's gate, under an arrangement made between two houses that now have no living name between them. The wages come out of a chest at Grimhaldr that nobody has audited since 799 AF, and the men are still there.
-
Karagunn's smithy row and both watch-tower hearths are lined with Grimhaldr firebrick, and the whole northern order comes off one kiln bank. Karagunn takes about a third of that output and has begun asking for two years' supply in advance.
With no living names at Grimhaldr, Karagunn has entered a claim on the kiln road and the sulphur tarn, arguing that the gate courses are Karagunn masonry and the masons' bill is outstanding. Two other holds have entered claims on the same courses.
-
Grimhaldr's firebrick contracts to the Anvil Stair holds lapsed with the last living name, and Vurrgast has taken four of the five on a filing that recites Grimhaldr as unable to perform. The fifth is held by the hold that owes Grimhaldr the most money, and Vurrgast has left that one alone.
-
The loan house at Yatagaru carries 40,000 silver of Grimhaldr firebrick paper, secured on kiln output that has not been weighed since the last name went out of the house. Yatagaru's factors have twice asked the Forge who may sign a release for a hold no longer covered by Clause I, and have twice been told to apply to the clan.
-
Vaskaryn has bought nine quarter-shares in the Redgate toll out of the estates of Grimhaldr men who left no heirs, paying the Falkvald assembly's clearance fee on each. Four Anvil Stair holds hold that a toll share on a Forge-bound road cannot pass to a house with no gate, and the Forge has taken the point on notice twice without ruling.
-
Coal for Grimhaldr's kilns comes off Thurmgrim, nine hundred tons a year down the shoulder road, on a schedule cut in metal by two houses that were both warm when it was struck. Neither has a name to revise it, so the tonnage arrives on the old figure and the clerks at both ends keep filing.
-
Nothing grows on volcanic waste, so Grimhaldr's kilns are fed on Wolds barley and salt mutton carted up the Redgate road, sixty quarters a quarter-year. Belcarrow has raised the price twice since the house went cold and has been paid both times without a word.
Factors at Redgate price Thrangar's paper on the assumption that somebody in the counting house still signs for it, and decline to say who. Said in the Anvil Stair
