Skarveth
Skarveth lives on land — granaries, herds, the slow reliable revenue that pays for everything more interesting. Skarveth keeps a second route under toll.
The Wright of Skarveth is a human first. It sits at its own people's tables, marries into them where the law allows, and takes an insult to them as an insult. The tradition is divine. Its orders hold one moral extreme or the other, and both wings read the Accords as a compromise, disagreeing only about what with.
The holding
the Drusen Meads — the ford toll in no rate table
Gravel ford on the Ferravant, water-meadow and ox pasture above it, badlands rim behind, a stockaded assembly on Corvantine survey.
Water-meadow and ox pasture stand over a gravel ford on the Ferravant, halfway across the Aurelmarch grain floor, with the badlands rim closing the view north. The meadow depends on the underground passage release out of the Thurmgar running through July; below the ford the river takes lighters and above it a wagon crosses dry most of the year. Hay, oats and beef come off the Drusen Meads and are sold at the ford rather than carried further. The assembly sits inside a stockade on ground the Corvantine survey has rated as arable since it reached here, and Farrowgate's walled market is a day's cart to the east.

Three names hold the Meads, so every decision taken is the house's and is heard out in full at the summer assembly.

Neutral trades, and no more than that 7
Ostwyck 17 Ostwyck buys its winter bread off Skarveth's surplus, rowed out to the island in open boats. It pays in cured whalebone and salt, because Skarveth's assembly will not hold a northern IOU over a winter.
Vaskaryn 21 Vaskaryn funds Skarveth's seed corn and ford repairs every spring against the standing crop and nothing else. Four hundred quarters of barley come back down each autumn, and Vaskaryn keeps a twelfth of it at the wharf to feed its own crews.
Emberkeel 42 Emberkeel's mine pumps empty into the river head, and Skarveth's water meadow depends on that outflow running through July. Skarveth pays twelve crowns a year and holds no document, because its assembly recognises only what was spoken and Emberkeel only what was cut in metal.
Halvresk 47 Halvresk keeps four posts on the rim above Skarveth, paid for in oats and ox-hides. Raiders come through the gap twice a year and have not reached the ford since 798.
Naskarre 48 Naskarre stands on granite and grows nothing, and buys forty quarters of oats a year from Skarveth. Skarveth delivers to the head of the marsh road and no further, the gorge track having destroyed two of its wagons since 802.
Valdrenne 71 Valdrenne farms nothing and buys ninety quarters a year from Skarveth for its wharf hands and stables. Skarveth is paid on a two-month bill and has started asking for cash at the ford instead.
Kazdrun 79 Kazdrun buys three hundred quarters of bread grain a year at Skarveth's ford and pays the outsider's rate, which Skarveth's assembly set at a fifth above the standard table and keeps out of its minutes. Kazdrun pays it, and has twice sent the difference to Ferrovane as a complaint about weights.

Three names hold the Meads, so every decision taken is the house's and is heard out in full at the summer assembly. Oats go up the gorge road to Naskarre and no further than the marsh road head, the track having taken two wagons since 802 AF. Kazdrun's gate pays a fifth over the survey table for three hundred quarters of bread grain, a rate kept out of the minutes, and has twice sent the difference to Bellmark dressed as a complaint about weights. Ostwyck takes barley meal and malt off the surplus and pays in cured baleen and salt, the assembly declining to hold a Falkvald note across a winter. Twelve oxen were distrained by Bellmark's assessors in 810 AF over the ford toll, and the court is still waiting for the assembly minute in writing.

Kazdrun buys three hundred quarters of bread grain a year at the Ferravant ford and pays the stranger's rate, which Skarveth's assembly set at a fifth over the survey table and keeps out of its minutes. Kazdrun pays it and has twice sent the difference to Ferrovane as a complaint about weights, which is not the complaint it has.

Valdrenne ploughs nothing and buys ninety quarters a year off Skarveth for its own wharf hands and stable. Skarveth is paid on the counting-house bill at sixty days and has begun asking for coin at the ford instead.

Ostwyck buys its winter bread as barley meal and malt off Skarveth's surplus, landed at the landings and rowed out to the island in open boats. Ostwyck pays in cured baleen and salt off the wintering crews, because Skarveth's assembly will not hold a Falkvald note over a winter.

Four hundred quarters of barley come down the Ferravant from Skarveth's ford each autumn, and a twelfth is taken in kind at the moorings before a sack is landed. The spit grows nothing, so the landings feed their toll crews and pilots out of that twelfth, which Skarveth's assembly has formally read as a grievance at nine consecutive sittings.
The landings advance the seed corn and the ford repairs every spring against the standing crop and against nothing else. Three names hold Skarveth, and one wet harvest on the Ferravant loam would put the loan book in front of an assembly that has disliked it from the start.

The underground passage pumps at the Sixth Gate discharge into the Ferravant head, and Skarveth's water-meadow depends on the release running through July. Skarveth pays twelve crowns a year for it and holds no instrument, since the assembly will recognise only what was spoken and Emberkeel only what was cut in metal.
-
Halvresk keeps four posts on the badlands rim above Skarveth, which pays for them in oats and ox-hides at the survey valuation. The drifts come through the rim gap twice a year and have not reached the ford since 798 AF, which is the whole of what Halvresk is selling.
-
Ferrovane's assessors distrained twelve of Skarveth's oxen in 810 AF on the ground that the Ferravant ford toll appears in no rate table anyone can buy for two coppers. Skarveth's answer is that the ford was tolled by assembly decision four generations before the survey reached it, and the court has asked for that minute in writing.
Assessors on the grain floor say the twelve oxen were taken to find out what the Meads could stand to lose, and that the answer went unpublished. Said in the Aurelmarch
