Meldrath
Meldrath keeps soldiers — real ones, with an officer corps and siege trains, since two centuries of dragons declining to fight has left mortal armies to do all of it. Meldrath maintains a school of its own.
Meldrath is Undivided. Its shape is an instrument, and its loyalty runs to the roughly two hundred beings in the world it considers truly relevant. A petitioner gets further with an offer than with an appeal to local kinship. Its institutions are arcane. Mage-cities and chartered guilds run on written procedure, and the tradition supplies most of the plate-readers the ring argues in front of. The house also carries A divine establishment, of long standing and no goodwill toward the arcane side. Both are indispensable, so neither has been suppressed.
The holding
the Aurel Wood — the hall no living name signs
Old oak on clay, lecture halls and a drill field behind a ditch, one gated road
Old oak grows on heavy clay here, in one of the wood patches the Aurelmarch keeps where the plain will not drain, and the timber is worth more standing than the ground would return under a plough. A ditch and turf bank enclose the lecture halls, the reading yards and a drill field of forty acres, with one gated road running out to the fork on the Solmarch highway. Sorrenmark's rye begins just beyond the ditch and is not for sale across the fork. Vaddrek's oxen road comes five days downhill from the north-east, and Sekhemra's cutting gangs work the eastern quarter of the oak under licence.
Connections
The proctors still sit, the drill field still commissions officers, and Clause I has covered no one inside the ditch since the roll closed.
Allies takes this house’s side 0
No house on the ring takes this one’s side.
Neutral trades, and no more than that 4
Halvresk 47 Meldrath has commissioned eleven of Halvresk's officers since 800, at twenty crowns a head and a season's keep. Ferrovane stopped recognising Meldrath's certificates when the house died out, so the men Halvresk hires are cheap and unemployable anywhere that keeps records.
Drusenberg 62 Drusenberg is owed eight thousand crowns by Meldrath, taken in 801 against supplying its drill field. Northern custom requires the debt read out at the summer assembly in the debtor's name, and there is no name left to say, so the reciter reads out the place instead and everyone present notes the substitution.
Umbermere 67 Meldrath still enrols Umbermere's water clerks and still issues certificates under a seal with nobody alive behind it. Umbermere keeps paying because a certificate rejected at the Forge would void nine years of its filings, and three other houses have asked Meldrath's remaining teachers whether the seal can be transferred.
Vaddrek 81 Nine hundred quarters a year come from Vaddrek's farms into Meldrath, which is what its lecture halls and drill field eat. Sorrenmark grows rye up against Meldrath's ditch and will not sell across the road fork, so the grain comes half a day downhill from a dwarf concession instead.
Enemies has something open against it 6
Sorrenmark 14 Sorrenmark's camp sits on the road fork and closes it to Meldrath's traffic for eleven days at each spring and autumn muster. Meldrath's convoys go the long way round and pay Vaddrek for the privilege.
Maeryvane 24 Maeryvane has claimed Meldrath's oak woods under a charter four hundred years older than the survey. It says it is acting on instructions and will not say whose, and it waited until Meldrath's last family member died before filing.
Sekhemra 25 Sekhemra cuts 3,000 cords a year in Meldrath's oak woods, on a licence Meldrath's officers renew and no living Meldrath member has signed since the roll closed. The money goes into an office and is entered without question, and the cut was doubled in 818.
Cuiveril 43 Meldrath has admitted no student from the Reach since it died out, and Cuiveril has taken nine of its lecturers and its best course. Meldrath's officers still send the Forge a yearly list of the poaching.
Ferrovane 50 Ferrovane struck Meldrath off its list of recognised schools the year the house died out, and no Meldrath certificate has been accepted for a court post since. Meldrath halved its fees and started taking students Ferrovane had failed, and there are now two grades of clerk on that road who will not sit in the same room.
Ythelas 77 Two hundred and forty books borrowed from Meldrath before its last member died are shelved at Ythelas, which will not return them to a house with nobody alive in it. Meldrath's remaining officers have twice put men on the towpath below the library, and Aldemarch's guards have twice removed them.

The proctors still sit, the drill field still commissions officers, and Clause I has covered no one inside the ditch since the roll closed. Halvresk has taken eleven commissions off the field since 800 AF at twenty crowns, cheap because Bellmark struck the Aurel Wood off its list of recognised halls the year the plate went cold. Grain comes half a day downhill from Vaddrek, nine hundred quarters a year, because the nearer rye is Coltfold rye and the fork shuts to Wickstone carts at every muster. An office renewed Sekhemra's licence to cut three thousand cords and doubled it in 818, and the payments go into an account that has drawn no query. Maeryvane has entered a claim on the oak, pleading a charter four centuries older than the survey, and says it acts on instructions it will not name.

Meldrath's drill field commissions the Watch's officers, eleven of them since 800 AF, at twenty crowns a head and a season's keep. Ferrovane stopped accepting Meldrath certificates for court clerkships when the Meldrath plate went cold, so the men Halvresk hires are now cheap and unemployable anywhere with a records office.

Meldrath's still enrols Umbermere's water-clerks and still issues certificates under a seal with no living name behind it, at forty silver a term. Umbermere keeps paying because a certificate refused at the Forge would void nine years of cistern filings, and three other houses have asked Meldrath's remaining lecturers whether the seal can be transferred.
-
Meldrath has taken no Reach entrant since the house went cold, and Cuiveril has since had nine of its lecturers and its main incomes treaty-jurisprudence course. Meldrath's proctors still send the Forge an annual list of Cuiveril's poaching, and the Forge still files it.
-
Drusenberg holds eight thousand crowns of Meldrath paper, taken in 801 AF against the victualling of Meldrath's drill field. Vaskarni practice requires the debt formally read at the summer assembly in the debtor's name; since the Meldrath plate went cold there is no name to recite, so the rememberer reads out the holding instead and everyone present notes the substitution.

Maeryvane has entered a claim on Meldrath's oak, pleading a charter the Corvantine confirm rather than issue and which predates the survey by four centuries. Maeryvane says it acts on instructions and will not say whose, and it waited until the Meldrath plate went cold to file.

Sorrenmark's legion camp sits on the road fork and closes it to Meldrath traffic during the spring and autumn musters, eleven days each time. Meldrath's convoys go round by the Ironfurrow oxen road and pay Vaddrek for the privilege, which is the only part of the quarrel that has made anybody money.

Two hundred and forty volumes lent from Meldrath before the last Meldrath name was struck are shelved at Ythelas, which will not deliver them to a house with no living names. Meldrath's remaining officers have twice put men on the leased towpath below the library and Aldemarch's watch has twice taken them off it.
The Forge still files the proctors' annual list of Cuiveril's poaching, and clerks on the road note that somebody at Wickstone is paying to have it filed. Said in the Aurelmarch

Arms
A great library door standing ajar on a dark empty room, a war-sword leaning against the jamb, a snuffed candle on the stone step.
Azure, two spears in saltire Or; in base a book open Or; a chief Or; a bordure of cold iron. (Plate 55; no living name.)
The field colour is the house's tradition and the bound edge is the state of its plate, and neither is the house's to choose.
