Duskenmoor

Hangwood, the Hrimgard March · Warm iron · 4 living names

Duskenmoor makes the things everyone else spends. Ore out of the ground at Hangwood, then smelters, smithies and engines. Duskenmoor also retains plate-readers of its own.

Duskenmoor is Undivided, and its human shape is a working convenience rather than a claim of kinship. The people of Hangwood are governed rather than represented, and the house says as much when it is asked. Its institutions are primal. The border is a wide thing rather than a line, the herds move with the season, and the treaty reaches Hangwood at about the strength of a rumour.

The holding

Blackwillow — the yard across the water from the assembly

hex 8,2 · cell r1c2 · coast Marked: the log boom slung across the inlet mouth

A walled timber yard on the inlet's far shore, opposite the Hrimgard assembly ground.

Blackwillow's wall runs along the far shore of the northern inlet, opposite the ground where the Hrimgard assembly meets, near enough that a horn carries over the water. The inlet cuts a day's sail inland and freezes late, and the yard works the timber rafted round its mouth: dark slow-grown stuff off the Hangwood slope that will not rot, with alder and birch coming down on the tide. Behind the wall are saw pits, a pitch house and a wharf of the yard's own. Fellstrand's weirs sit two days up the water, and the Storvald Wolds begin east over the tundra.

Connections

Four names run a timber yard that roofs most of this shore: the cairn-chapel and boat frames for the Hrimgard Watch, two hundred weir stakes a year driven at Fellstrand, and prop timber up the Sturmhalt Water for Falkbeard's grain cellars against an order left unsigned for eleven years.

Being Vaskarni on a Falkvald beach costs the yard a fifth on every quarter of barley, which Belcarrow charges openly and calls a Vaskarni rate, and it keeps the yard out of the reading aloud, since a charter sent across the water in writing is read out by another assembly. Sedgemoor still holds the second copy of the Hangwood grant, and both houses send a factor to the Forge each year to keep the claim from going stale.

  • out 58 Sturmhalt timber

The cairn-chapel roof, the Watch's boat frames and every coffin-board on the point come out of Duskenmoor's yard, sixty rafts a season worked round the inlet mouth. Duskenmoor is asked each year to swear the delivery at the Hrimgard assembly and each year sends a written charter instead, which somebody else reads out and nobody answers.

  • out 36 Prospern timber

Weir stakes, hurdles and the platform decking at Prospern are cut and driven by Duskenmoor's yard, two hundred stakes a year on a standing order. Duskenmoor knows the same weirs are what Tessarel is suing about and has raised its price for the difficulty rather than pick a side.

  • out · in 78 Belcarrow law · grain

Duskenmoor's ironletters found the precedent that lets the Wolds' watch road stand as a garrison work rather than an enclosure, which kept the ridge out of the assembly's hands. The fee came off the yard's grain account, and Belcarrow has since asked for two further opinions on the same terms.

Duskenmoor's yard buys its whole provision off the Wolds, a hundred and twenty quarters of barley and the season's mutton, landed at the yard's own wharf. Belcarrow charges the yard a fifth above what it asks the Falkvald holdings on the same shore, calls the difference a Vaskarni rate, and says so openly.

  • out 62 Drusenberg claim

Duskenmoor's timber charter was granted twice, once by the assembly at Drusenberg and once by a village upriver that believed itself competent, and Drusenberg's have held the second copy since 741 AF. Neither house can produce a rememberer who heard both grants, and both send a factor to the Forge each year to keep the claim from going stale.

  • out 12 Falkbeard timber

Prop timber for Falkbeard's grain cellars, about four hundred lengths a year, goes up the Sturmhalt Water from Duskenmoor's yard on the convict barges. Duskenmoor has delivered against an unsigned order for eleven years and takes payment out of the cellars in grain, and the only objections have been spoken.

  • in 56 Lysathiel information

Lysathiel is paid to keep the name of Duskenmoor's timber buyer out of the Hrimgard assembly reading aloud, and takes first refusal on Duskenmoor's mast stock instead of coin. A Vaskarni house in Falkvald country with four names in it cannot afford to be formally read, and Lysathiel has not had to raise the price in nine years.

  • in 26 Malgareth credit

Malgareth advances Duskenmoor's yard its cutting season each spring against the autumn raft price, and sends eight of its own hired men down as escort on the drove track. Duskenmoor pays for the escort whether it wants it or not, which is the yard's standing complaint at the assembly.

  • Raft dogs, cramp irons and boat nails for Duskenmoor's yard come off Ancarien's single forge, about nine hundredweight a year carried down the tundra flank. Ancarien charges by the piece and will not quote for a season, on the grounds that its charcoal comes out of somebody else's woodland.

Across the water they say the yard's cash reserves survive bad seasons, though the assembly has not examined the accounts. Said in the Hrimgard March

Vert, a hammer Or; in base a balance Or; a bordure of warm iron. (Plate 6; four living names.)

The field colour is the house's tradition and the bound edge is the state of its plate, and neither is the house's to choose.
