Brannhold

Kettlemouth, the Storvald Gulf · Warm iron · 5 living names

Faith is the revenue. Pilgrims come to Kettlemouth, and the house counts the traffic among its ordinary income. Brannhold also holds a stretch of frontier.

The line between dragon and mortal is where Brannhold draws it. Its peers are the other Wrights, everyone at Kettlemouth is a subject or a client, and the arrangement is set out plainly in the house's own charters. Its institutions are divine, and doctrine settles what interest would otherwise decide. The tradition signed last, and the reasons are still preached at Kettlemouth.

Black sand and cooled lava above Kettlemouth harbour, cairn-field behind, watch-forts on the sulphur road

Kettlemouth is the last harbour on the Storvald Gulf that will take a hull in February, and a burying ground grew up above it for that reason. The ground is black sand and cooled lava, good for fodder in the hollows and hostile to anything else, so barley and lentils come up the caravan road off the Sunjara Upland or across the water. Behind the cairn-field the sulphur road climbs to the benches at Brimholt, and four watch-forts sit where it runs together with the pilgrim track. Nine Moorings lies two days down the shore, and Sekhemri carters bring burial salt to the wharf and take oil back.

Connections

Brannhold sells burial and garrison, and five living names sign for both.

The full account — 5 houses, 5 arrangements

Brannhold sells burial and garrison, and five living names sign for both. The watch-forts cover Grivane's benches at one barrel in twenty and the fuel they burn, and the collectors do better where the pilgrim track joins the cart road than Grivane's carters think proper. Seven hundred sacks of Umbermere barley and lentils come up for the season against oil at the wharf price, and the assembly's fifth is paid on the landing and charged into the cost of a burial. Nuirendil's nine hundred marks stand against three seasons of offerings. Ground rents here are cut in lead so Karagunn can match the halves at Sleetgate, which leaves the grazing leases good in a Kazdrunn gate, unheard on the March, and untested against a gate that declines to produce its half.

  • out 60 Grivane garrison

Four watch-forts on the sulphur road cover the benches Grivane works, paid at one barrel in twenty and the cut fuel the forts burn. They stand where the pilgrim track and the cart road run together, which suits Brannhold's collectors better than it suits Grivane's carters.

  • in 76 Nuirendil credit

Nine hundred marks advanced against three seasons of offerings at Brannhold's cairn-field, secured on the pilgrim landing and the fodder sheds behind it. A poor third season would leave Nuirendil's clerks holding four acres of black sand and a claim on a temple's door money.

  • in 67 Umbermere grain

Seven hundred sacks of barley and lentils come up the caravan road to Brannhold for the pilgrim season, traded against oil and taken at the wharf price. The assembly's fifth is paid on the landing and Brannhold puts it into the cost of a burial.

  • in 72 Dunmoral feud

Brannhold takes the poorer half of the bodies landed at Brannhold into its cairn-field and charges no carriage for them, which Dunmoral's registrars have twice described at the Forge as a fraud upon the dead. Neither filing named a sum, since traffic that pays no carriage is counted nowhere.

  • Ground rents at Brannhold are cut in lead and Karagunn will match the halves at its own gate, so the grazing leases are good in a Kazdrunn gate and nowhere on the March. The Falkvald assembly does not hear a bargain nobody swore aloud, and Brannhold has stopped putting them to it.

The Forge has it that Cattlegate's registrars would drop the fraud filing tomorrow if Oathcairn would name a rate for the dead it carries free. Said in the Storvald Gulf

Or, a flame Gules; in base a tower Gules; a bordure of warm iron. (Plate 39; five living names.)

The field colour is the house's tradition and the bound edge is the state of its plate, and neither is the house's to choose.
