Verrigan
Verrigan lends. Mints and loan portfolios out of Bellfen, and a book of sovereign debt that includes, quietly, paper signed by dragons. Verrigan also works the Forge.
Verrigan is Undivided, and its human shape is a working convenience rather than a claim of kinship. The people of Bellfen are governed rather than represented, and the house says as much when it is asked. Its institutions are primal. The border is a wide thing rather than a line, the herds move with the season, and the treaty reaches Bellfen at about the strength of a rumour.
The holding
Aurelwharf — the wharf that asks nothing about seating order
Leased wharf of piled stone at the northern Hoshimura anchorage, counting house, records office, boat approach.
There is deep water at the northern Hoshimura anchorage, a lee in most weathers, and no soil worth the name, which is why the wharf is piled stone and everything behind it is roof. Counting house, records office and two sheds stand on the fill; the lease comes from Sirenthal two days south, dated twice. Rice, water and firewood arrive off the Matsugane concession track and across by coaster, measured in koku by the seller and entered in bushels here. Ginseto's refinery smoke shows south-west across the strait on a clear morning; the free ports lie two days beyond it, and no ground within reach grows anything at all.
Connections
Carriage, discount and a cabinet kept in Corvantine form pay the rent.
Allies takes this house’s side 3
Ashcrole 09 Verrigan holds Ashcrole's client money and takes a fifth for standing between the agency and whoever is really paying. The ledger is kept in a foreign form at a rented wharf two cells away.
Utagitsu 32 Verrigan lends against every silver boat before it sails, on the strength of Utagitsu's mark alone. Half of what Utagitsu eats comes off Verrigan's wharf on credit, and that account has not been square in four years.
Marrowe 70 All of Marrowe's alum, some sixty tons a year, leaves through Verrigan's rented wharf for three coppers in every hundred it is worth on landing. The Amasekan harbours refuse to rank a Marrowe agent above a coast house, and Verrigan asks nothing about precedence.
Neutral trades, and no more than that 4
Kurohane 20 Rice, water and firewood for Verrigan's counting house come down the track from Kurohane's stores. One house measures in koku and the other enters bushels, and the difference is argued at every quarterly audit and then split.
Sumizuki 35 Verrigan buys Sumizuki's toll income at a fifth off before the season starts, and delivers the beacon's firewood on the same account. Sumizuki has twice asked for a better rate.
Ravenscarp 41 Ravenscarp lends Verrigan its working money each season against the landing dues, and has renewed it every year since 811. Verrigan is quietly positioned for the day the ring stops mattering and Ravenscarp is not, and the loan is most of what keeps the two civil.
Aelvarion 54 Verrigan's wharf lease runs from Aelvarion on a term counted in elven years, and Verrigan's copy carries two different dates, neither of which Aelvarion's office will accept, so the renewal has been stuck since spring and the rent is paid provisionally. Aelvarion also arranged the marriage that brought a Ferrovane cadet into Verrigan's family, took two years of free rent for it, and that settlement is still not carried out.
Enemies has something open against it 2
Falkbeard 12 Verrigan bought Falkbeard's debts for about a twentieth of their value and has spent six years looking for anyone with authority to sign them off. It says a dead house's pledges pass to its creditors, two dwarf holds say they pass to the clan, and the cellars are still full.
Wraymoor 73 Each house guaranteed the other's paper at the free ports, and neither guarantee was ever registered. A bill came back unpaid last year, the record office will not hear either of them on it, and the two are now suing each other in a court that sits in four languages.
The full account — 9 houses, 11 arrangements
Carriage, discount and a cabinet kept in Corvantine form pay the rent. Sixty tons of Marrowe's alum a year go out over the wharf at three per cent of landed value, no Amasekan harbour on this coast being willing to rank a Wetstone factor above a coast house, and Verrigan charges for not raising the question. Ravenscarp finds the season's working capital at a twelfth against the landing dues and has renewed it since 811. Utagitsu's refined bars are advanced against before they sail, while half of what Ginseto eats is landed here on account, and that account has not been square in four years. Six names keep the ledgers, argue the koku at every quarter's audit and split the difference, and all six stand on the free-port pleadings against Wraymoor.

The whole of Marrowe's alum clip, some sixty tons a year, goes out through Verrigan's leased wharf at the northern anchorage at three per cent of landed value. The Amasekan harbours will not rank a Marrowe factor above a coast house, and Verrigan asks nothing about seating order and charges for the omission.
-
Verrigan bought Falkbeard's grain-cellar bonds at eleven coppers for each silver of face value and has spent six years looking for a name that could execute a release. Verrigan's position is that a cold house's pledges pass to its creditors; two Kazdrunn holds hold that they pass to the clan, and the cellars are still full.
-
Verrigan carries Ashcrole's retainer account and takes a fifth for standing between the agency and whoever is paying it. The ledger is kept in Corvantine form at a leased wharf two cells away, and no Amaseki court has yet ordered it produced.
-
Verrigan discounts Sumizuki's toll receipts at a fifth in advance of the season and lands the pine billets for the beacon on the same account. Sumizuki has asked twice for the discount to come down to a sixth and been told the risk sits in the season rather than in the house.
-
Verrigan endorsed Wraymoor's paper at the free ports and Wraymoor endorsed Verrigan's, and neither endorsement went to Ferrovane's records office. A bill came back last year, the records office will not hear either house on it, and two Corvantine counting houses are now suing each other in a court that sits in four languages.
-
Half of what Utagitsu eats is landed off Verrigan's leased wharf on account, in rice, salt and oil, and the account has not been square in four years. That is how a Corvantine house of six names came to hold a lien on Amasekan silver.
Utagitsu sends refined silver bars to Verrigan's counting house. The coast accepts Utagitsu's test mark without weighing the bars again. Verrigan lends money against each boat before it sails, on the strength of the mark and nothing else.
-
Ravenscarp finds Verrigan the working capital for the season at a twelfth, secured on the landing dues, and has renewed it every year since 811. Verrigan is quietly positioned for the day the ring stops mattering, Ravenscarp is not, and the loan is most of what keeps the two civil.
-
Verrigan's lease runs from Aelvarion on a term reckoned in elven years, and Verrigan's copy is dated twice, once by regnal year and once by survey. Aelvarion's records office accepts neither date as the date of entry, so the renewal has been in hand since the spring and the rent is being paid on account.
Aelvarion brokered the match that brought a cadet of Ferrovane into the Verrigan line, on the argument that a house of six names cannot carry a wharf lease without standing behind it. The brokerage was taken in two years of forgiven rent and Ferrovane's settlement is still unexecuted.
-
Rice, water and firewood for Verrigan's counting house come down the concession track from Kurohane's stores. Kurohane measures out in koku and Verrigan enters bushels, and the difference is argued at every quarter's audit and then split.
The Forge has it that the Aurelwharf ledger names principals no Amaseki court has yet ordered produced, and the free-port bar prices it accordingly. Said in the Hoshimura Straits

Arms
A drowned bell lying on its side in fen water with coins spilling from its mouth, the point of a coronet breaking the surface nearby.
Vert, a key Or; in base a coronet Or; a bordure of warm iron. (Plate 75; six living names.)
The field colour is the house's tradition and the bound edge is the state of its plate, and neither is the house's to choose.
