Stonewrit
Stonewrit works the Forge itself — embassies, votes, marriage brokerage, and the arrangement of other people's successions. Stonewrit also holds a stretch of frontier.
Stonewrit is Kinsworn. It keeps dwarf inheritance law over its own succession and dwarf gods over its own oaths, and the Forge treats both as facts about the house rather than as affectations. Its institutions are primal: thin borders and herding country, with the weakest adherence to the Accords. A wyrm in a trackless waste owes nobody much.
The holding
the Nine Courses — the season-let quarter above the cut stair
Sintered lava benches at the cut stair's head, a walled embassy quarter let by the season
The Nine Courses occupies nine sintered lava benches at the head of the cut stair, just above the Forge walls, inside which the hold's writ does not reach. Nothing grows on the benches, and bread is hauled up the cut from April to October. What the ground carries is lodging: a walled quarter of rooms, strongboxes and mule lines, let by the season to embassies of all six speech-forms, which is why the clerks here are hired for languages before arithmetic. Anvil Stair lies five days north, the Greyseam a week west, and every cargo for the Forge passes below the wall and pays at a hold gate.
Connections
The quarter is let by the season to everybody, at a rate posted in four languages and raised each spring.
Allies takes this house’s side 1
Neutral trades, and no more than that 6
Quorravel 27 Stonewrit renews Quorravel's pilot licence each year, and in 804 gave it one season instead of the usual five. Quorravel's plate is cracking in front of every ambassador in the city, and its ships are now insured one voyage at a time.
Sumizuki 35 Sumizuki rents two rooms and a strongbox in the embassy quarter for 340 silver a season, paid up front because the local banks will not give an island house credit.
Gundvarr 44 All of Stonewrit's bread, about 900 hundredweight of grain, is hauled up the stair from Gundvarr between April and October, half of it paid for in embassy lodging. Gundvarr has asked four times to have the account settled in metal.
Ashgrave 46 Ashgrave rents two rooms and a strongbox for forty crowns a season. Those rooms are its entire address inside the walls.
Vorlaine 68 Stonewrit arranged Vorlaine's marriage settlement in 812 and took its fee as a permanent share of a water source, which it has since sublet twice to embassies the water office would not serve. Vorlaine calls the fee extortionate at every renewal and renews it.
Caelithil 74 Caelithil rents rooms and a strongbox in the embassy quarter by the season, at a price Stonewrit posts in four languages and raises every spring.
Enemies has something open against it 3
Anvilbrand 23 The only certified copy of Anvilbrand's testing charter sits in Stonewrit's embassy quarter, and Stonewrit rents out readings of it to whichever house is pressing a claim that season. The original was inside the gate when Anvilbrand was destroyed.
Thurmgrim 29 Thurmgrim has had no living family member since its roll closed, and Stonewrit has asked the Forge to hand its share of the road tolls to the neighbouring holds until the record is corrected. Thurmgrim's clerks answer on time and stamp by office rather than by name.
Kazdrun 79 Kazdrun cast 1,400 iron clamps and sixty tons of fittings for the rebuilding of Stonewrit's stair in 762 and has been paid for nine hundred clamps. It files the account at the Forge every ninth year, and Stonewrit's answer since 771 is that the stair is dwarf ground and the work was a clan duty.
The full account — 10 houses, 10 arrangements
The quarter is let by the season to everybody, at a rate posted in four languages and raised each spring. Caelithil holds two rooms and a strongbox, Ashgrave two more at forty crowns, and Sumizuki pays 340 silver in advance, since no hold here will carry an island house on credit. all the bread comes off Gundvarr's Seventh Gate Fields, nine hundred hundredweight up the cut stair each summer, half of it settled in lodging rather than coin. Gundvarr has asked four times to have that account struck in metal and cut, and the clerks keep sending paper, which is what a hold becomes when it lives off embassies. What Emberkeel's toll-share papers buy is four days' notice of a schedule revision, time enough to re-let a room before the ambassador knows what the stair will cost.
-
Ashgrave rents two rooms and a strongbox in Stonewrit for the Forge terms at forty crowns the season, which is the whole of the agency's address inside the walls. The letting runs season by season, and Stonewrit's clerks decline to discuss renewal before the last month of the term.
-
Stonewrit brokered Vorlaine's settlement of 812 and took its fee as a standing share at the fourth surface opening, which it has since sublet twice to embassies the water records office would not serve. Vorlaine's people call the fee extortionate at every renewal and renew it.
-
Thurmgrim's gate on the Forge road has had no living name behind it since the roll closed, and Stonewrit has filed at the Forge to have the gate's toll share held by the stair holds until the entry is amended. Thurmgrim's clerks answer on time and seal by office rather than by person, which is the whole of Stonewrit's argument.
-
Sumizuki rents two rooms and a strongbox in Stonewrit's embassy quarter for 340 silver a season, paid in advance because the Kazdrunn will not carry an island house on credit. Stonewrit raised the stage rent a fifth in 804 and every coast house paying it lodged the same protest in the same week.
-
Quorravel's pilot charter is countersigned each year in Stonewrit's embassy quarter, and in 804 Stonewrit granted it for one season instead of the customary five. Quorravel's plate is opening in front of every ambassador on the stair, and the pilot hulks are now insured voyage by voyage instead of by the year.
-
The only certified copy of Anvilbrand's test charter sits in Stonewrit's embassy quarter, and readings of it are rented to whichever hold is pressing a claim that season. The original was inside the gate when the sky came down.
-
Stonewrit buys its whole bread ration off Gundvarr, some 900 hundredweight of oats and hard wheat hauled up the cut stair between April and October, and settles half of it in embassy lodging rather than coin. Gundvarr has asked four times to have the account struck in metal and cut, and Stonewrit's clerks keep sending paper.
-
Stonewrit buys the Thurmgar toll-share papers from Emberkeel by the season at ninety crowns and posts nothing it learns. What Stonewrit gets for the money is four days' notice of a schedule revision, which is enough to re-let embassy rooms before the ambassadors know what the stair will cost.
-
Kazdrun's cast 1,400 iron cramps and sixty tons of sleeper shoe for the recutting of the stair below Stonewrit in 762, and has been paid for nine hundred cramps. Kazdrun recites the account at every clan assembly and files it at the Forge every ninth year, and Stonewrit's answer has not changed since 771: the stair is Kazdrunn ground and the work was a clan duty.
-
Caelithil rents two rooms and a strongbox in Stonewrit's embassy quarter by the season, at a rate Stonewrit posts in four languages and raises in the spring. It has twice asked for a term of years and been told the quarter is let by the season to everybody, which is true and is also the whole of Stonewrit's income.
Embassy clerks say the season rent at the Nine Courses is set by what the quarter has heard that week rather than by what a room is worth. Said in the Anvil Stair
