Thelanor
The academies are the asset. Thelanor has former students in rival chanceries, where they carry habits learned at home. Thelanor maintains another line of watch-posts.
Thelanor declines the usual categories. Its elves are *contemporaries* who remember the same centuries, and Quietwater remains one of the few realms where a Wright genuinely negotiates. Its institutions are primal. The border is a wide thing rather than a line, the herds move with the season, and the treaty reaches Quietwater at about the strength of a rumour. An arcane establishment works alongside the primal institutions. Their jurisdictions overlap at Quietwater's gate, river court or marriage table, and neither will yield its place.
The holding
the Long Alders — the college on the plank road
Ditched enclosure on a dry oak knoll, wet alder beyond, plank road to the Vaskarni causeway
Dry oak on a knoll, ditched and banked, with wet alder standing in water most of the year beyond the ditch. This is the inland shore of the Ostrovek Sound, where the Rooken stops behaving like a river, and the plank road out of the Long Alders provides the firm route between the enclosure and the causeway head. Nothing here will carry a plough, so the enclosure eats beef driven up off the grass and barley lightered in. Drusenberg's weirs are three days west along the causeway, Kazdrun's peat pits two days south, and the alder crossings between them are patrolled on a summer rota.
Connections
Schooling is what the enclosure sells, and Drusenberg is the steadiest customer: six ledger clerks a year at fifteen crowns a head, taught the survey forms as well as the tally, which is why Bellmark accepts Sedgemoor's Vaskarni paper without amendment.
Allies takes this house’s side 3
Meketri 37 Sixty head of Meketri's cattle are driven up to Thelanor each autumn and killed there, which is most of what Thelanor eats through the winter. Meketri takes half the price in salt and half in schooling, because a house that appears in no survey needs somebody who can read what the survey says about it.
Corvane 38 Thelanor's college has trained Corvane's supply officers for three years each since 742, at 1,400 silver a year and free passage for Thelanor's carters. The fee has been paid every year since.
Kazdrun 79 Thelanor keeps twenty-two men on a summer rota maintaining the plank road and crossings up to Kazdrun's gate, and Kazdrun pays in iron and nails rather than coin. Those men keep half a day's road and six alder crossings.
Neutral trades, and no more than that 0
Every arrangement this house holds is warmer or colder than business.
Enemies has something open against it 2
Malgareth 26 Thelanor was never paid for carrying 4,000 timber poles, and Malgareth's last member died before it could collect. It has claimed the cattle road instead, arguing that a road the creditor has maintained for nine years belongs to the creditor.
Drusenberg 62 Drusenberg sends six clerks a year to Thelanor at fifteen crowns each, and Thelanor teaches them the survey forms as well as the accounts, which is why Drusenberg's paperwork is the only northern paperwork Ferrovane takes without amendment. Thelanor also says the willow beds below the causeway are its own, and asks only that ninety years of Drusenberg's cutting be recorded as licensed. Drusenberg refuses.

Schooling is what the enclosure sells, and Drusenberg is the steadiest customer: six ledger clerks a year at fifteen crowns a head, taught the survey forms as well as the tally, which is why Bellmark accepts Sedgemoor's Vaskarni paper without amendment. Corvane's commissariat clerks come for three years each at fourteen hundred silver, paid in every year including the two in which the houses' companies were contracted against each other. Meketri's sixty head come up each autumn against salt and winters of reading. Twenty-two wardens keep the plank road as far as Kazdrun's gate for gate-iron and nails, which the Rookenmarsh assembly does not know. Thelanor wants the willow cutting below the causeway head entered as a licence, and Sedgemoor understands that perfectly and will not do it.

Thelanor says the willow beds below the causeway head lie inside Thelanor's perimeter and that Drusenberg has cut them for ninety years without leave. Thelanor does not ask for the beds back, only for the cutting to be entered as a licence, which Drusenberg understands perfectly and will not do.
Drusenberg sends six ledger clerks a year to Thelanor at fifteen crowns a head, a Coinvault house on the marsh being unable to get literate men out of the villages. Thelanor teaches them the survey forms as well as the tally, which is why Drusenberg's paper is the only Vaskarni paper Ferrovane's records office will accept without amendment.

Thelanor's wardens keep the plank road and the alder crossings as far as Kazdrun's gate, twenty-two men on a summer rota, and Kazdrun pays in gate-iron and nails rather than coin. Neither house has told the Rookenmarsh assembly, which holds the causeways to be the assembly's to police.

Thelanor holds notes drawn on Malgareth's counting-yard for the carriage of 4,000 alder poles, unpaid since the last Malgareth name was struck from the reading aloud. Thelanor has entered a claim against the drove track instead, on the argument that a road the creditor has maintained for nine years is the creditor's.

The plank-road college at Thelanor has taken Corvane' commissariat clerks for three years each since 742, at 1,400 silver a year and a standing exemption at the temple gate for Thelanor's carters. The fee has been paid in every year, including the two in which the houses' companies were on opposite sides of the same contract.

Sixty head of Nine Wells cattle are driven up to Thelanor's every autumn and killed at the enclosure, which is most of what Thelanor eats through the winter. Meketri takes half the price in salt and half in schooling, four of its young men reading at the enclosure each winter, a house absent from the survey needing somebody who can read what the survey says about it.
Factors on the sound say the Long Alders keeps more wardens on the crossings than a Lorehall house has any use for, and prices its schooling accordingly. Said in the Ostrovek Sound
